If riding in a remote area " we are entitled to"

a good call to carry but something that makes sence.

carying in a back pack is most practical and you can place you firearm in a pocket that is easily to get at.

Just hope never to have to use it

I don't carry or own, but am seriously thinking about it as there have been 2 bike jacking's in the last 3 weeks within 2km's of where I live and regularly train.

If i did I would consider something like this.

As a side note, if you are confronted whilst riding and the person trying to rob you of your bike, phone, etc is armed with something that could be seen as a deadly weapon then I gather you have the right to use deadly force.

But if you draw and they decide to turn and run then what can you do? As far as I know nothing except for let them get away and live free to try again the next day.

This also goes for if you and your bike somehow get separated and the individual decides to make off with your bike what are you legally allowed to do? I gather smile and wave good bye to your bike.

My 2cents worth! If you shoot him you will be arrested!! You will spend time in jail before you get bail, You stand a chance of being molested in jail, you will be charged, you will spend a fortune on legal fees, it will change your life forever no matter the outcome! That's how it works in SA! IF I am not mistaken no-one has been killed for their bike yet! I don't think the risk of the above is worth it! If he pushed me off my bike and I judge Mace isn't worth it let him take the bike, its a material object (I know they are expensive and it will take a while to replace but the repercussions of shooting him are far too big) On the other hand, He gets your gun, shoots you or uses it to shoot someone else you are in even more K*K!! As much as we want to I don't think its worth it!

No one has been killed yet out of luck.

Wait actually, last year someone was followed home on his bike in PE, killed in the house.

Earlier this year someone in Johannesburg survived (the bullet missed his head iirc) a shot to the head, but it did hit the helmet. I will kill an attacker in self defence with absolutely no remorse...

I am not being insensetive here but think about this....

You are riding along. You take a minor fall and your gun goes off and shoots your girlfriend/best mate/Epic partner or your father in law. What you gonna do homie??!!

Ask oscar, his gun went off when he was looking at it (so he says).

What would you do? Please don't say it would never happen. Tell that to all the people who have been shot by mistake. Ask all the people who were carrying the gun that went off.

you would get another oscar maybe =\ i wonder how many of adult-accidents happen because of negligence (negligence including me taking out my gun to show my friend- its not for fun, its for extreme cases)

On a serious note and in reference to the OP 's question, personally, ideally, although I currently don't but would want to carry one of the machine pistols on a chest strap. Being hidden under your shirt, after they start taking off with your specialized s-works, you unzip your cycling shirt and clean up the trash. just try not to hit the carbon frame

again, thats what I wish I had for self defence. Right now all I have is a 10kg bike with plugless bar ends that I can swing like a sharp hammer... sux

I was aslo thinking about it, I was thinking of taking my grandfathers 6.35mm handgun, it is small so you can strap it to your body. On the other hand I was thinking, why don't the make small paintball guns, you can use a CO2 bomb and then it would be small and you don!'t need a license, you can take pepper balls as well.

Smaller than this you mean?

0,68 Caliber

well I suggest you do some proper research on the matter but just to get you started :

A mountain biker couple had been attacked and the woman raped while riding along the R21 at the R25 off-ramp on Thursday last week.

Terrible,.... I also remember clearly the mountain biker who was shot in the neck on Witkoppen road in broad daylight some time back. He survived, but barely, had he not been with someone he would be dead.

There are most likely many others.

Carrying a gun while cycling is, without a doubt, a very bad idea. All that will happen is that you will give the robbers even more incentive to rob you. They can now get a bike AND a gun. And secondly, by knowing this (as stated above) they will probably just shoot cyclists from afar, kill you, and see what they can get.

Another very important point is that if you carry a gun, you must be prepared to use it. Are you really, really willing and able to kill 1 or more people, face to face, by shooting them? If not, don't carry a gun.

The amount of bike hijackings is shocking, I agree. But this, if anything, will only make the matter worse.

I totally disagree with you. I ALWAYS carry my 9mm short while going for a ride. It saved me twice in 5 years and once helped to save two ladies while jogging past a "fishy" area. But you MUST learn how and when to use it. You MUST have a good measure of common sense. And you MUST know the relevant law. If not, you are better off without.

If you are on your own and 3 guys with guns jump out at you, are you actually going to start a gun fight? If you have no intention of shooting all of them before you get they get the chance to shoot you....id just stick to riding in a group. In my humble opinion that is....

Are you serious? 3 guys with guns will not rob a cyclist my friend. If "they" get their hands on that much fire-power, they will aim for a higher loot. Like do a house robbery or similar! Due to my job, I get the opportunity to talk to many violent criminals and one thing I realized is: when it comes to choosing a victim, they are like water. They choose the path which offer the least resistance.

WARNING :offtopic:

I used to carry daily. For 7 years. Not on the bike but everywhere else. I stopped because I realised I was feeling a bit too brave and had a bit of a Clark Kent "I will protect you" attitude. I have been in situations where shots have been fired - maybe it was because I eventually hoped for stuff to happen. It is the type of kuk I am trying to get away from when cycling. Now we are debating this already. These animals are really getting to me now. Rant over.

Can I just put it out there, you are a bunch of trigger happy freaks.

It's the pro-gunners that are making this country a 5th. world backwards thinking nation full of aggressive cowboys and Dirty Harry's.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

For the last 12 years I have carried a gun....North American Arms .22. Got me out of three sticky situations thus far......not fun at all.

I used to ride with it until I doscovered The Hub....read we're the *** is and stay away......don't ride with it anymore.

When we ride were it might be ended I take it, no hassle clips onto your bib and stays there. No hassle.

Six of one half dozen of the other thread this......give the chop your bike lie down and let it be.....go buy another bike.
