The "I hate Specialized" Bandwagon...... what's the deal?

Wyatt I think we're talking at cross purposes.

I was very specific to state that you can get "better value for money" from other brands e.g. Giant, Merida or Silverback.

But you can also get royally taken to the cleaners by "niche brands" because of the preceived uniqueness of the bike you buy (when in actual fact cyclcin is a rich-man sport filled with people who can afford exactly what you thought was unique).

I'm trying to show that there is value in the Spez range even if you are on a R40k budget.

That is my counter to "SPEZ IS OVERPRICED AAAAAAAAARGHH!!!!!"

Yes an S-Works frame and build will also fetch R100k.  But that puts Spez in the company of many other bikebrands (SC, Ibis, Evil, Cannondale, Intense) and hardly singles them out as taking the mickey.

I agree with this fully.

The other thing I mentioned and people probably overlooked.

Compare the dollar or euro prices, some local distributors are just plain greedy and that makes the product very expensive locally .

Absolutely.  I know of a local distributor that sells built-up "niche brand" bikes for R75k.  I did the math and I could build the exact same bike for R50k and that was without the prices they get for parts obviously, so I suspect they probably build the bike for R35k-R40k and then flog it for R75k.

Good for them.  I think that's unreasonable so I won't support them.  Same reason I won't buy an S-Works Enduro for R100k.  It's too much money for what you get.  So is a Santa Cruz Nomad build for R110k.

But I'm very keen to pay R25k for a Camber Expert Evo frameset and rebuild my current bike onto that.  That to me feels like value and I can live with them making a solid profit on it.

No. I ride a two year old Stumpy Comp. Which is why I don't buy a R40 coffee just because "it says something about me".

I also drink Castle, which usually sends 60% of the people on this forum running with stains in their underwear shouting "BUT IT'S NOT CRAAAAAAAAFT!!!"

Careful, next thing you are going to hear about what capitalist Aholes SAB are.

Calm down JB, you are getting a little too worked up and becoming a little too defensive.

No need to take everything so personal .

We all now know you are wealthy, well done .

And we all know you dilike Spez. Noddy badge for you aswell

When I bough my Epic Comp I paid R27.5k. A Giant Anthem X1 would have been R25k with a throwaway saddle and of course the Epic came in red.

Yes if you want to operate at the top end of the scale of diminishing returns the big S will gladly take your money but the sensible models are solid purchases.

From what I deduce they need a suspension service center in Gauteng and this concept store thing doesn't work for me. A bike shop should have old skewers in a box somewhere and not look like YDE.

This man was one of the first shops to sell and support the rand round here. Check yourself bro.

Now that he doesnt sell it anymore, all of a sudden its the devils brand.

I don't think you'd be able to find an LBS that supported them as much as Summit did, tbh.

They sold me my first DS bike and one of the first Epics in 2003. It took them a few weeks to convince me that this relatively unknown brand was the way to go. I am not sorry they did.

We must be reading different posts  Thought his comments are rather balanced (on this thread at least..)

Wyatt is more than happy to service my Epic...which happens to be a 26er as well (insert all the bashing here since I ride Specialized and on 26's as well ;)) and he sells some Specialized products still. I'm pretty sure if anyone really felt it was "the devil's brand" they would send you packing when you walked in with it despite the terrible business sense that would make.

I love my Epic. I bought it second hand because I totally agree on the pricing comments. I cannot justify the costs of a new one to myself. Then again, I also love my road bike which is a Raleigh. Oh hell, I just love bikes ;)

I also have a pair of Specialized BG Ridge long fingered gloves which are really cool, and actually were alot cheaper than similar gloves from Giro and 661 when I was looking around.

I dont see what the fuss about Spez is to be honest.

My roadie is an older sworks E5 alu. I like the way it rides and Im very happy with it.

Having said that it was pretty cheap 2nd hand and I seriously doubt I would buy a spez new, just because they are so damn expensive.

I am in love with the Venge though!

Bridge Cycles no more a stockist as well...all the mom and pop stores that built their brand and now discarded to make way for the concept stores...not cool..????????????

Brand bashing aside (It is a fun past time), it is very scary how expensive cycling has become over the past few years.

It is really at a point now where a decent bike is out of the reach of the average working class person, unless they have saved for a long time, been in the game for a while and have been buying / selling and upgrading in time or the current trend, buying the bike on credit.
