Barry Stuart Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 (edited) Strange question but am I the only who who have toe nails that just keeps falling off.I have two toes that constantly gives me a pain in the butt. If I remember correctly the shape is called a hammer toe Once they grow back to full it is basically a week or two and then they are all blue again and the process repeats itself. I am now thinking of having them removed permanently.Have any of you had this done and can you recommend a podiatrist? Jess sheds them constantly… then chases me around the house with them. Whenever she does an ultra it's just a matter of days and a few of them start turning black. I don't know whether it's shoes, shape of the feet, toenail length or, well, genetics? I've personally never had a toenail depart me. Edited September 28, 2018 by Barry Stuart Mats 1

(My GP removed some toe nails in the past, it's not too much of a deal. (Although totally and cleanly removed, it is not as in perm if that is what you mean.) These days I use my Dremel to keep the nail thickness in check. (Eg when the nails start to grow 'over' each other) Edited September 28, 2018 by Pieter-za Mats 1

I am now thinking of having them removed permanently.Have any of you had this done and can you recommend a podiatrist?I have hammer toes on both feet, the middle 3 toes. You are right it is a pain in the buttLuckily I have hardly ever had blue nails or lost nails. Other problems but not loosing nails.Maybe if I ran ultra distances then the things will get damaged enough to fall off. A podiatrist once gave me silicon spacers that fit on each toe and are supposed to help “flatten” them out. Dischem sell something similar but not made from silicone. I tried the dischem ones and actually preferred them. Mats 1
shaper Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 I have lost nails twice and both been on the one foot big toe, the rest of the toe nails would give any one giving them a pedicure nightmares
Chris_ Posted September 28, 2018 Posted September 28, 2018 Both my big toes are really killing me right now. I've never lost any toe nails but I reckon these guys are on their way out. Which sucks because I imagine they take a while to come right and will be pretty uncomfortable when I get running again.
Frosty Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 (edited) Second time for me, today, over the 15Km mark, albeit slower than the first time (in May). Legs felt great at the end, and I'm happy I'll survive my first half in November. I never imagined that one day I'd be saying, running is fun. It isn't, especially when someone on a bike comes freewheeling passed me on the downhills, but when it's over it great to be able to talk about it. 719Km so far this year, so I'll be clocking much more than I initially planned... 750Km. edit 719Km so far, not 704Km. Stretch Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Normal ultras no problem.First comrades I lost about 6Second comrades 4Third comrade 2 So I'm hopeful that with my 4th I won't lose anyI lost 1 toenail after my first comrades. Took about 3 months to depart. 2nd and 3rd didn't lose any. I guess I can count myself lucky..I don't suffer from blisters either
Mudsimus Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Shoe size and shape is a big factor. Personally I think the rule of thumb when it comes to shoe sizing is a load of bull. All my shoes fit with less than 5mm gap at the front, and I never get blisters or black nails. Not even on steep downhill trail runs. If your shoes are too big you get forward movement and it puts pressure on your toes.
Barry Stuart Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Good news for Garmin users, I saw FNB has started supporting Garmin Pay so I tested it out on my run today and it worked perfectly. Pretty cool being able to pick up an Energade at the garage on a long run without having to carry cash. Frosty, Andrew Steer, Hacc and 1 other 4

SeaBee Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 And so it happened that I had a bike ride again! SeweweeksPoort, the week after Cape Town. What an awesome ride... Next time I might actually try to not forget my water in LadiSmith the morning of the race! (That made for an interesting story...) Now, still struggling with the foot and having tapered/recovered for two weeks I am SO ready to do something. Might hit the gym tonight - before I actually hit somebody (or even worse, go running!) Chris_ Posted October 2, 2018 Posted October 2, 2018 Just got done at SBR. Its so refreshing to talk to experts sometimes. Mike knows his stuff. I did some stretches, some measurements, some videoed running, q&a's and then he formulates whats up. I'm holding up quite well to be fair, got a couple stretches and strengthening things to do, otherwise we chatted for a while about my shoes. and the pitfalls of them, I'm sad to hear my Hokas may be the cause of my aches and pains but his reasoning held good ground. He clearly pushes a few brands, but I'll take my time and look around for some new shoes taking into consideration his advice. (Maybe even go back to SBR - you get a small discount after having done the test, and get the brooks (ghost 11's) he suggested, I've heard the name on the Hub a few times.) Well worth a visit I reckon. It wasn't free.., but its not something you need to do often.
