Pulse Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Personally, I would say the lighter the better. I have used the Petzl Tikka 200lumen before (just because I already had it as its my backup light on the bike), with no issue. Barry Stuart 1
Jaws677 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I have a running belt with a red cycling light on the back and a Led lenser headlamp in the front Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Hacc 1
dave303e Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 I frequent the night trail runs and have a lot of Adventure racing experience, also happen to own a f#ckton of headlamps so here goes: Petzl Tikka, Led Lensor SEO 5, Energiser Vision HD, Black diamond Astro- all good 150-200 lumin lights, all perfectly fine for running at night, light and batteries go for days. Led lensor NEO- super light, not that bright but not bad, would take one of the above instead for a night run, but like at wartrail where only the first hour or two is in the dark I will use it to save carrying weight later in the day. Petzle e+ lite- perfect emergency back up light, but not useful for anything more than that. Led Lensor H7R- light enough to run with, useful for AR with adjustable beam, good option but more expensive. Led Lensor H14- heavy, eats batteries, gives great light though but too much and too heavy for running, good for hiking though and navigation. Ryder Orion bike light(with headlamp mount) overkill and too heavy. My 2c is go to the nearest store and grab a Petzl Tikka, Black Diamond Astro, Energiser Vision HD or Led lensor SEO 5. All will work 100's, the Petzl, BD and led Lensor just feel more solid... Barry Stuart and Pulse 2
SeaBee Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Also use SEO 5 for trailrunning - works great. As long as you don't do what a buddy of mine did - and run with a peak cap without turning it around whilst using the light. Then no light is going to save you!

dave303e Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 another thing, and this is probably counter intuitive, but take note of the conditions when running... If it is near full moon and you are away from light polution, turn your headlamp off, your eyes will adapt and you will actually see a broader range not just the spot where your headlamp shines, we have had a few spectacular nights trekking along with no lights on at all, just a small one on every now and then to read a map. I swear on full power it practically attracts the fish. I haven't tried the Ryder or Petzl but the one thing I prefer about my Black Diamond over the LED Lensers is the strap, which sits a lot more snugly and comfortably for running.

Hacc Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Has anyone read this article? http://www.coachnorrie.co.za/2018/02/04/counting-up-and-down-to-a-successful-marathon-and-ultra/ Can someone please explain to me the sub 4 plan in layman's terms?
Prince Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Run 14 minutes walk 2 minutes. Run 13 minutes walk 2 minutes. Run 12 minutes walk 2 minutes and so on....i think?
Chris_ Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 I've just written it out and it seems too good to be true.. (and may well be if my maths has evaded me) if you run 1 min @ 5mins/km and walk 2 mins @ 9mins/kmthen run 2 and walk 2run 3, walk 2run 4, walk 2up to run 13, walk 2,then reverse it back down, run 13, walk 2,run 12, walk 2run 11, walk 2by the time you get to run 1.. you've covered 42.17kms, in 234 mins, or just under 4 hours! No thanks. I will continue to do what works for me. Whay not try to run the whole way?? Run the first half conservatively and try to beat that the second half. On Akasia my fist split was 1:56 and the second half about the same (~30 seconds faster). I ran the first half roughly 15 mintues slower than what my 21km race time will be - well inside my limits. On the other hand I treated this mainly as training run as I was injured and didn't want to push too hard. If I was racing a marathon, which I will only do during the second half of the year, I might go for the crash and burn approach again. Edited February 7, 2018 by CobusV dave303e and Lexx 2

Hacc Posted February 7, 2018 Posted February 7, 2018 Thank you for explaining it to me.My concern with all the walking is I get exponentially slower the more I walk. Cramps kick in and I feel sluggish and my legs feel very heavy. Interesting article though. Pulse and CobusV 2
