How many of you all actively practice a specific breathing technique whilst running?

I played around this morning during a treadmill run and noticed that I can get a pretty big drop in HR just by actively controlling my breaths, taking slower and more paced breaths.

At my age..I just try get as much in as possible

I probably won't ever run in anything else than Nike again. After spending a small fortune trying a heap of other expensive shoes.

The problem is that with the price of these shoes it just becomes almost impossible to test other ones... So you just stick with old faithful. I have this season bought some flatter neutral shoes for short sharp fast runs though

Anyone with a vague fascination with Killian Jornet or even anyone with interest in human performance should listen to Rich Roll's podcast or youtube interview with him.

I was always willfully ignorant to his superpowers, rather believing he's just a freak of nature, but damn this guy is a scholar of 'fitness' and puts in some MAD hours of hard hard work.

Really cool listen.

I watched a couple of youtube videos regarding breathing while running and I am definitely doing it wrong (just breathing through my mouth)

I now try and concentrate on breathing through my nose, even if it is for two or three poles. I am still struggling to do it for long periods of time. I can definitely see a drop in heart rate as well. It also helps me to think of something else while suffering on a hill.

Had a look at his instagram again the other day.  He is MAD as well!  What a machine...

Who has done the Hillcrest 21km? It's on 10 February. Would you consider it a reasonably fast route or not?

Ive done it, really enjoyed it but I am not a fast or experienced runner but if you want my thoughts, I would say for experience strong runners it is a fast route. Really nice run.  Just last 3km have a sting.

....

Fuel wise- I did 4h- 38km at kings kloof sat morning purely on tailwind, I felt very stable in terms of fueling, no ups and downs or hitting the wall, just felt like I was on cruise control the whole way. Stomach was fine after 4h liquid only and even after adding a 500ml protein shake made with real milk(non processed at all literally from the cow to a tank) my stomach was still good all day which is good.

....

How did you do this? Is there an extension or did you just do 2 of the normal trails?

I've never run Kings Kloof but heard its pretty decent. Next month I want to hit a 50km and I need to pick a nice enough areas to run back 2 back 2 back trails.

When I do a slow, easy or recovery run I'll keep my mouth closed and breathe exclusively through my nose. Mainly so that it forces me to stick to the right effort level. If I need to breathe with my mouth then I know I should slow down. I'm sure I look like a knob though.

Is there perhaps a nice trail race on 22-24 March that one can make a weekend of that you guys know of?  Not to far out of the states preferably.

They have a 25km loop, I ran that then just did a shorter loop for 2nd lap hey. It is good running, all runnable but you get some solid elevation gain and some good tech enough trails.

Drakensberg Northern trail- Technically it is in the Freestate, top of Oliviershoek pass by Sterkfontein dam, really good event and lovely area to run.

Thanks Dave, I saw this one last night.    Do you know the race?   How rough is the 40?  I don't want to spoil the rest of the weekend, the idea is not to be hammered for the rest of the weekend but rather just to add a trail run to the weekend.  Then I would rather just do the 20, but if the 40 is not to hectic then that will be it.

I haven't actually run the race, but I have run on the route a few times in the last few years. It isn't a parkrun, you will certainly know you have run a 40, but depending on how hard you push and how fit your are you can still enjoy the weekend. I think the 20 is very doable for most, it is an awesome part of the country to run, wide open with views both ways.

I will likely run a fair amount of the route that Wed as the first TP of X-Berg.
