The only reason I want a vest is for my Tailwind. Seems to work the best for me. Starting to wonder however if using a soft flask that I can just tuck away isn’t perhaps an option. That is if I can actually run, pour the Tailwind powder into my flask and then add water all on the trot.

Small ziplock with pre-measured tailwind, as you approach water table take out ziplock and flask, open flask, tear corner off ziplock and empty into flask and then add water- note to throw ziplock away properly or keep in zip pocket till after race. You can do this in the 10 steps leading to water table when you dropping heartrate anyway

I might end up with water in the bladder and hydration stuff in a bottle/soft flask.

I see the Salomon Soft flask speed is out of stock everywhere it seems.

Shot for that will have to try this out at the West Coast half this weekend.

Does anybody perhaps have the gpx file for the Three Peaks Challenge? Suppose I have to start training for this after the Cape Town Marathon. Something tells me I’m gonna regret wanting to do this [emoji2363]

I only run with a vest or pack if I need to take food. I have a tiny rain jacket I stash in my pocket and a 500ml hand held.

That keeps me happy for up to 20km in the mountains.

If I go longer and don't need food I usually just plan a route I know I can fill up on.

I haven't used a bladder for anything in years. My AR backpack can fit 8x 750ml bottles.

Easier to fill, easier to clean and I can have food, water and juice without cross contamination.

Hi all

Thanks for all the suggestions and input. I have done 4 runs with the backpack so far, longest being 30km today. My pack houses a 2l bladder but I don't fill it like I did on day 1, I run with either 1l or 1.5l. I don't really need more as I cope quite well without water. The fit is quite snug, and I have used the trick of minimizing the air in the bladder. My runs have become more comfy and I'm just trying to get more used to it now, and soon I'll have to make the decision to run the CT marathon with it or not.

Plans outlined here

Gerda Steyn raced in the Middlesbrough 10km in the U.K. today. She klapped it, winning the race (for the 3rd year in a row) and got a new 10k PB running 33:05. New York Marathon in November should be very very interesting

I have settled on not trying anything new for CT. Will just use my soft flask as planned and try and persuade the wife and kids to second me so that I can minimise the weight I have to carry. Although I have done lots of trail with my back pack I need this to go well as it will be my Comrades qualifier.

Vaal city marathon sounds like it was a dogshow... race collection on the morning ran way late, delaying the start by 20minutes, and then the leading runners got taken off the route by the lead car, so our clubs top guy potentially missed out on a win as he ended up doing an extra km+ which dropped him to 10th. And to top it off, it sounds like the whole route ended up being short by over 1.5km due to a marshalling mistake, so nobodies result will qualify them for Comrades

Can imagine there are going to be some very angry runners out there

Spirit of Flight 10k League race (Swarkops AF base) was also approx 1.2km short.   (Rumour has it the pace car took wrong turns on the runways / taxiways ??)

Geez that sucks Andrew. It’s not the top guys that worry me, it’s the slower guys that have much fewer opportunities to qualify for Comrades and Oceans that have my sympathy. Or the guy with limited finance that can only enter one or two races to qualify and cannot afford accommodation and transport to other races. . Someone needs to man up and take responsibility for the cock up. Lots of unhappiness on social media about it.

We had +-15 runners from our club that all qualified at Vaal River City marathon on Sunday, even if you add 6/7 minutes to their times.

It is unacceptable, they should refund the runners their money.
