Cyclists attacked with sjambok

I do not think a license would change a thing, haters gonna hate. I am sure all cyclists pay for their vehicles licences, which is sitting at home not clogging up roads.

100%

I often have the debate with "non-cyclists".

As cycling is mostly a sport for the guys with higher income, between road and income tax, we generally contribute more to the roads than the average joe.

The license/tax debate is not the cause of the irritation of the haters, they just use it to try and justify the feelings they have towards cyclists. They hate because they are angry, but people cant openly admit that, it would make them morons.

is that the reason we dont have to buy licenses? because the admin isnt worth the cost? if motorists want cyclists to be licensed to use the road then does it not make sense to make the effort?

Your license fee is determined by the weight of your vehicle as a proxy of how much you need to contribute to the upkeep of the roads  - if you do the math you will know why we don't pay fees and large trucks R1000's of rands.

If it was for your right to use the road then the fee would be the same for everyone.

That said, I will gladly pay my 50c per annum if it would shut up the people who use the stupid argument that cyclists don't pay license fees.

i agree but what im also trying to get to is that if we are legally licensed we are therefore legally allowed to own space on the road. it might make motorists think twice?

Simple answer is no, because that is not the causation of their hatred, but rather a "justification" of it.

rant on - (this is not a personal attack just relevant to your post)

don't hold your breath about cycling licences mate- its coming (there are already greedy players out there giving an eye to cycling and wondering how they can milk us ) and when it does - I doubt you or anyone else will be as blasé about getting one as you are about the abstract idea of a licence

I personally absolutely refuse to get a licence from some nonsense money making "authority" to control yet another aspect of my life in this country where most people don't give a damn about the laws or rules

and it wont stop us getting killed -it will be like etolls - just another easy way to milk people that are easy to catch

they need to start hammering the drivers in this city (and others) about their lawless attitudes (by pulling them over and fining them ) to everything (texting ,phones ,drunk driving, not obeying signs and lights etc)then all this arrogant "I can do what I like in my car and everyone else can go to hell" will stop and suddenly we will all be careful and courteous to others in our cars again

and cretins with sjamboks wont consider it a fun pastime that they can get away with to go round slapping other people on the roads

rant off ....

sorry I had to get that off my chest..

I ride on the roads everyday more or less and at least 3 times a week I see the darkman on the rusty bike in the black cloak with the sythe over his shoulder bearing down on me in the form of a moron motorist who thinks I should go to hell

Cyclist had to pay license fees back in the day.

And no.  Motorists did not think twice.  Not even half.

Simple answer is that WE HAVE A LEGAL right to be on the road so they only need to think once. There are no requirement (at present) for a license so no need to struggle with justifying our right to the road. We have a right ... period.

The sjambok issue is ridiculous and should be seen in that context. It is unacceptable and law need to deal with the perpetrators.

I understand this is a rant, and sometimes during a rant we get a bit carried away.

When we start justifying why we will not pay if a license become a requirement then we going down a slippery slope.

WE CYCLISTS have a right to be on the road BUT at the same time WE CYCLISTS find all kinds of justifications for why we don't need to obey the rules of the very same road. Our cry for ALL MOTORISTS to be mindful of cyclists are justified, however, we need to look at ourselves too. I have to be mindful of road rules when I cycle, and would love to see all cyclists do the same. Unfortunately WE FIND ALL KINDS OF REASONS to abuse the rules.

There's no cars coming!

It's only a STOP STREET and not a ROBOT!

I'm turning LEFT so its OK!

It's a T junction and I'm going straight, so it's fine!

I'm too tired to stop!

It's easier for a car to decelerate and accelerate?

I don't like un-clipping!

Jeez, we've all used and heard a thousand more.

People, let the watchword be "LET IT ALL START WITH ME"

The only way to correct this attitude is to set the example. Lets all commit to making a difference.

I wouldnt mind paying a licence fee for riding my bicycle on the roads on condition that all incidents with motorised transport and cyclists are criminal cases.

Cars can willy nilly run over a cyclist and get away with it or a slap on the wrist, charges must be murder or attempted murder.

I know this wont happen but it would be ideal.

sorry pah bear ... but at what point did I say I don't obey the rules of the road (I do because if you don't a giant SUV drives the ****over me and I don't have airbags)( I obey them in my car too I have had a licence for twenty years NEVER a single ticket EVER)

all I said was I refuse to buy into a bulldust bicycle licence which wont save me from stupid motorists

so you go get a licence and then ....you go make a difference

No. You are in any event legally allowed to be on the road; except:

On freeways, and

when there are dedicated cycle lanes...

Saw a nut-job cycling on Marine Drive on the road, right next to the darn (empty) cycle lanes.

saw one guy this morning with no lights, on the road whilst road works are on and a very open and clear cycle lane less than 5m away from him ... I know it was open and clear because I was cycling on it.

now the matter at hand, assault..... rather disgusting act from the accused!

Bicycle licences is nothing new, they had them in the 80's...dont know why they stopped

Huge administrative burden for very little return and extremely unpopular with the vast majority of cyclists.

....and lots of things were big in the '80s that people have since had second thoughts about and stopped.

Would these "licenses" only apply to recreational road cyclists? who wear lycra and helmets and cleats and use Strava? or will they also apply to commuters, the guys who ride their bikes in everyday in peak traffic and rely on their bicycle as their primary form of transport? I think you know what I'm getting at here.

Will a cycling licence make it any safer? No.

Will it be policed? No

Is a R500 fine for an "unlicenced vehicle" affordable to someone who can only afford a bicycle as their primary form of transport? No.

Most importantly (in the eyes of the people making the decisions), can any money be made out of it? No.

So they'll probaly implement it and then sit in the cradle and "spot fine" or confiscate unlicensed bicycles!
