She's a friend of mine.

As of last night: She's stable and her Dr's are really happy with her progress. I'll post updates as they become available. Thanks for all the concern

These are the absolute worst kind of scum.

I generally feel safe while running, as the most theft-worthy item on my person is my shoes. However, not these (insert absolutely inappropriate foul word here) scummy creatures (not humans). They're not driven by hunger, poverty or whatever else sparks justifying theft, they're just in it to cause hurt and suffering.

I'm all for the attempting of rehabilitation of criminals via the justice system. These things aren't criminals, they're a plague that needs to be eradicated.

Agree totally.

Lead pellet between the eyes for all of them.

Unfortunately we dont have a justice system to speak of, mob justice seems to work when society has had enough.

:(

Horrible to hear. Hope she recovers quickly.

I avoid that part of the Spruit altogether these days. Starts getting more and more suspect north of Riverside.

Just got an update from her daughter: She's alert and breathing without a ventilator.

It looks like she's out the woods

The endless stream of violence in our country is unbelievably difficult to live with and getting harder all the time.

So sorry to hear about this.

So very glad to hear she is okay.... i say okay, because the psychological trauma will be the worst of it?

Correct me if im wrong but werent there similar incidents on the Spruit in Jan last year where someone stabbed cyclists with a screw driver? Might be the same culprit taking advantage of the uncut bushes etc, and the quiet trails to prey on people.

Karma is a "nice idea" but I wouldn't rely on it I'm afraid.

Best option is to avoid running alone and avoid running along the Spruit itself I guess. Maybe Delta Park etc are safer?

Glad to hear that physically she is on the mend but mentally I am sure she is still hurting.

I hate that we have to be bullied out of riding such a lovely trail. When I commute from time to time, I hop onto the Spruit at the Riverclub traffic circle, that way I can avoid cars almost all the way home to Northcliff.

Maybe I've been lucky, riding for the better part of 10 years, mostly solo, without incident, but I think from now on I'll take my chances with the traffic.

But a runner? FFS, what exactly were they going to take from her? Savages  :cursing:

I hope she has a full recovery from this trauma.

I'm also a regular rider on the Spruit on my own. This might explain why it was so quiet yesterday afternoon. Ridiculous to think that we should now come and check in here to see if there has been an attack or not before we go riding.

All the best to the lady with her recovery, undoubtly going to be a lengthy process.

If beaches have "Shark spotters" perhaps the Spruit should have "Thug spotters"?

If memory serves he was caught near the Pick 'n Pay.

Think half the problem is that the Spruit, especially that section becomes incredibly quiet over the December period as many of those 'living' on the Spruit go home to wherever and then hanger ons start to lurk around for opportunist crimes or to rob anyone still staying on the Spruit.

One of the waste sorters mentioned to me that his mate goes back to Limpopo to his family while he tries to find alternative accommodation away from the Spruit because he'd been beaten and his possessions stolen the previous December.

Some of the other guys try and hide their things and sleep in the trees away from their clearings.

Either way, it's an incredibly tragic and angering thing to happen, really hope she pulls through ok. A lot to deal with  :(
