Brand loyalty - what would make you change?

Loved my Giants because I got a new frame every year, but the novelty of that wore off after the fourth one. Somehow chose the frames with issues!

i like giant because;

1. my LBS can get me stock quick quick (the other brand LBS's in town ain't so great when it comes to service)

2. price

edit: and I like riding away from the expensive bike owner types who think a top $$$ bike automatically gives them skill and fitness

I would have to agree with not buying a brand, vs buying a brand - I would much rather not support a brand based on a previous experience, or reputation.

What would make you consider a new brand for example?

Price (I'm a bargain hunter of note) vs performance or rather value for money. But it also has to meet my needs. If YT for instance made frames that could fit a full sized water bottle inside the frame it'd be on the top of my list.

But then there are other mail order type brands like Radon, Propain and Canyon that ticks all those boxes.

My understanding on the axles is there is no difference between 142 and 142+

Suspension linkage yoke goes hand in hand with with rear shocks, so I am not sure if that counts.

Not trying to argue here, but I so often here people talk about Spez having too many proprietary parts, but the way i see their bikes is that forks, handle bars, stems, seat posts, drive trains, brakes, etc can readily changed.

Maybe some of their aero bikes require Spez specific items?

Their standard yoke has a proprietary mounting standard which means it'll only accept shocks which have that particular mount option. Which aren't plentiful.

In order to run a "normal" shock you need to buy an aftermarket yoke, which voids the frame warranty.

I dont mind the brands, as long as it is value for money, frame and parts etc.

However, I now find myself rather looking at a frame and then adding parts I like.

Cotic have done nothing to convince me to buy from them , I saw one in 2011 and knew i wanted one ,last year that became reality. It was not Good nor A bad bike but has now evolved into one serious machine.

I could have gotten A cheaper steel bike that does the same but it was something about Cotic

Maybe its because its steel aswell ( It will take A moerse bargain to make me buy ALU/Carbon again)

What I know:

Bike rides smoother than butter

Makes me happy to just look at it

I enjoy every moment I ride it

I'll end up buying A rocket frame soon for probably more than 25k and maybe there are better frame available in that price range but I'll still buy the rocket.

i've always loved the giant reign and may still get one.

Other than that I buy reliable as my budget is very limited.

Eg.

Raceface make the best BB I have ever owned.

Cane creek's headset has yet to let me down where others have.

And my Shimano SLX brakes still stop me years later.

The only brand I am loyal to is Hope.. That sht has never let me down!

Two sets of x2's ridden to hell and back

Two wheelsets with Pro 2s also ridden to hell and back!

The most loyal and important for me is my not_so_LBS, those guys are awesome, make plans, fix things dont just replace them and are always down for some kakpraat!

When it comes to frames, I like them to be made of Ti or Steel and preferably by hand! Not always possible and not always in budget!

I have no brands that I feel loyalty towards , I would however be biased to certain brands could I afford them.

Currently I just buy what I can afford , be it new or second hand. All of my bikes are built up from bits and bobs, frame from here, wheels from there, seat post + stem + handlebar from whomever as long as they kinda match the colour of the frame.

On the groupset and brakes I would prefer Shimano everytime, except on an exotic type roadbike (f#€king patches), they should be equipped with Campy IMHO.

On the MTB I prefer Shimano all the way, but there is this older XX 2×10 carbon crank on the shelf at my Lbs that is gathering dust. If I can get a good deal on it I might have some Truvative parts on my bike soon.

That said there are certain brands I would try to steer clear of unless I can turn them for a profit again.

So in conclusion I would probably place myself as a value based (budget buy) consumer rather than a brand loyal one.

My red 57 Raleigh back-pedal post-office steel bike - no alternative....

Early 90's black GT Peace  SS 26'er... it is such an amazing "little" bike, so smooth, slick, smooth, easy, smooth, cool, did I say smooth...? Just a-freakin-mazing...

2014 Giant Trance 650B allu. A truly awesome, awesome, amazing bike. I've ridden mates' Spez, Merida's, Scott's, Schwinn's, other Giants, nothing comes close. (Have looked at KTM and Mongoose - just don't tell the Trance...)

Makes me happy to just look at it

.....

And THAT is the magic ingredient !!

When you get onto the bike with a smile it just gets better from there.

I have seen some really good bikes that just leaves me "cold" ...... and then there are those very special ones.

Another 90 minutes, then it is time to get on one of those special bikes, with my best riding buddy.

Doing Hermanus trails with the laaitie today .... now that is going to be one nice long slow ride ... 5 years 10 months old.  He has done 10km in the past, but stops every so often to take photos, or to look at a "gogga" .....  Not exactly a training ride, but man the highlight of my week !!

Sorry for going off topic ....
