I would give my left nut for one of those. Its sexy and capable, what is not to like?

For me, probably one of the best bikes you can buy.

The geo on that thing is so dialed for essentially a "marathon" bike its damn capable!

total hi jack, which bike would replace a titus Racer X 26er?

Something for say the Munga, but well suited to S2C and the odd jaunt round Jonkershoek, attakwas and 360one?

Oh yes, spare parts must be as common as chips, dont like having to wait weeks for parts.

Read my post. Implement.

You're not a podium contender. 120-140mm bike with relaxed geo. Stop thinking about wheelsize and just test the bikes to find the one that fits you. Medium, please. You'll be the limiting factor on the climbs on most of if not all those bikes.

Off the bat? Spark 940 or camber. Think about the rest if you don't gel with either. Though if you don't like them then well... Yeah. Even Dan Dobinson has a camber. With a 140mm pike on the front, but yeah.

the silverback 29er thingy option? velo has one at a good price

Not sure why the camber is being suggested over the epic for a marathon bike. To me the camber is a trail bike and will not be as fast in the flats.

I echo that the Scott is the best from the OPs list though.

Hey guys,

I'm looking at buying a new Marathon racing mountain bike. Please help me decide what bike to go for as I am not clued up enough to make a informed decision on this.

My options are:

KTM Scarp Master

Scott Spark RC900

Canondale Scalpel 4

Merida Ninty Six 7000

I never thought this decision would be so tough...

Scalpel 4

???? bias

The reviews are stunning too ????

Scalpel will be awesome.

I had the old scalpel for 5 years.  it had it's problems.  Then I decided to get something else.

Tried a few different bikes (giant anthem, trek fuel ex, trek top fuel), and then I tried the new scalpel.  It was game over.

I bought a new scalpel again, even though I know that the proprietary lefty components can be bit of a problem when servicing is required.

It is just such a sweet fun bike.

Don't underestimate the 100mm travel on the new scalpel.  It is very capable.

Very sweet ride....the 55mm offset on the lefty and Slacker head angle makes a massive difference ....

Lol...

Thaba blue on a cx rig  <_<

Are these Pyga bikes carbon? I heard that they are extremely expensive. I also heard that its a local bike... Should that not bring the price down?

"price" and "down" never go in the same sentence when discussing mountain biking.

"bend over" and "no vaseline" , however always do.

Was in same boat as you about 3 months ago (check out "Help a Buffalo" post). After much research and feedback from Hubland I narrowed it down to a Spez Camber or a Tallboy. I opted for the latter and could not be happier with my choice.

That said getting a Tallboy loan bike is not that easy whereas the guys at Concept Cyclery Cedar are very accommodating and helpful (gave me a Camber and a Stumpy to test) - so much so that I almost went Spez just because of the great service they provided.

Long story short - try do a test ride or two before buying, as it does not help having a bike that everyone says is awesome and you don't feel lekker on - my 2 cents.

I am mainly a roadie who also mountain bikes (prefer non-technical rides like KtC and Seweweekspoort), but also do the occasional “technical” ride.

My current mtb is a Spez Epic which I find quite twitchy on technical (for me) stuff so I am contemplating to buy a bike with a more “relaxed” geometry. I tested the Camber and a Pyga Stage Plus over a 5km not too technical course (Tygerberg MTB club Corridor) and found my Epic to be consistently 5% faster over that course (under same conditions and same effort).

Although such a test is not very scientific it made me decide to rather wait for the new Epic which will hopefully be a bit less twitchy but still "faster" then the other 2 bikes.
