It was pepper spray from a Copper that drifted with the wind into the peloton, which is why you should only pack the type that has a jet and not mist.

Hey Gummibear

These are your fantastic examples of what your Euro cops are good at

Next year all the TDF teams will be doing high altitude training in wind tunnels filled with pepper spray, yellow spray, dye spray and maybe some weed spray - you know .....  just in case....TUE for asthma

Did I mention that we'll be at the side of the road on the climb tomorrow . . . ;-)

We rode it a fortnight ago so I know where I want to be - just have to get up there again!

Sad news but not wholly unexpected. That was a rather nasty crash to witness live.

That’s very disappointing. I’m a huge fan.

As am I. PhilGil always seems to have a smile on his face regardless of results and comes across as a very decent gentleman.

How fast you recon he was going?

Don't know for sure but around the high 80's to mid 90's would be a reasonable guess. PhilGil is a very confident bike handler and from the visuals he was moving real fast. But as you would know from your own riding one's margin for error decreases greatly when your moving at high speed.

Old Phil Gil is sure lucky he was not hurt more seriously. He looked a bit shocked sitting there on the wall.

I’d guess he was not 100% familiar with that route and simply was going to fast for the corner.

Glad he survived to fight another day

Dude, he did one cartwheels... by the time he hit the wall he was doing no more than 20kph.

If he was doing 90 he would have landed on the other side of the valley.

I was talking about when he was entering the corner not the actual crash as he grabbed the brakes. He had to scrub speed because he was a) carrying too much and b) was on the wrong line through the corner. Had he been carrying less speed into the corner he might've been able to save himself from crashing.

Thoughts on today?

I'm predicting the following:

- Froome getting distanced and maybe clawing back again. Jaded legs from the last few back to back Grand Tour wins. maybe dropping to 3rd in the standings.

- Thomas riding away again for yet another win.

- Dumoulin gritting his teeth and just not staying with Thomas.

- possibly a nightmare stage with a billion spectators on the roads

- commentators talking about sprinters not making the time cut
