Saddle Bags on Road Bikes: cool or uncool?

Recommended Posts

I have a MASSIVE saddle bag on my road bike, and would not have it otherwise. It has space for three CO2 cannisters, three tubes, three tyre levers, master links for 9, 10 and 11 speed chains, a chain breaker, different sizes of cable ties and short pieces of 9, 10 and 11 speed chains. The last items I keep mostly to help out those that feel it isn't cool to carry a saddle bag, and have encountered problems with their chains. I have helped out numerous felllow cyclists in getting them back into the race. I almost stopped hellping out other cyclists after encountering THE rudest youngster at the Telkom Satellite Challenge a couple of years back.whose chain broke, and I stopped to help him by using one of my master links. He kept on rushing me on, telling me that he was in a hurry to get back to his bunch. After I helped him, he just sped of without any word of thanks.

Jaco, dont blame the youngster, he saw that saddle bag and obviously thought that you were a mobile race team mechanic, you lucky he never grabbed a water bottle and your banana stash off you too !

For now I am using cable ties for the strap that would normally go around the saddle-post.  I will later make something better for this ....

For those that are looking for a solution to permanently carry the basic tools, without using a saddle bag not loading your top .....

Scott has a bottle holder that incorporates a telescopic pump and a tool kit, including a chain breaker -

I had a saddle bag on my first roadie in 2012. Of course, back then I didn't know if it was cool or uncool.

It even has a rear light attached to it with a form of visibility stripes

I weep ????

how many strokes will it take on that pump to get a tire to 100psi ?

and where do you store your bombs then ?

in your jersey pockets again so....

its a nice multitool/cage combo but pretty useless with a pump for a roadie ...pity

Been tweaking the setup of the Scott .... moved the saddle forward .... cant fit the saddlebag bracket to the saddle rails ....

Went for a ride today without my trusty saddlebag .... felt like I left my "blanky" at home .....   :cursing:

but somehow I finished the ride and got home okay without the saddle bag .....

I may just take out the kitchen zink and fit the most essential stuff in a SMALL bag, that can strap under the seat rails.  Time has come for Maritz to carry his own spare tube ....

Went all the way up Dorsberg today. Took the saddle bag off to take a photo. Only realised in the parking lot that I forgot to put it back on...

It's a sign..........

..........that you should leave it there

or

............that you should ride back up there

You decide.........and let us know! :)

THAT is one nice setup !!

check the scicon range. that's what i had. it uses a nice clip system under the saddle so it works with dropper as well. many sizes available
