on the Yamaha side if you want to go 2-stroke you need to look for a YZ250, (and this is the important part) but one that has the Enduro conversion - so a WR gearbox and a weighted flywheel. This turns them from a wild MX bike to a less wild Enduro bike.

I used to have a YZ250 with the full enduro mods - that thing was a beast!  Not sure about your less wild comment.  That bike had more go than a KTM 300EXC!  Was scary most of the time, and I loved it.

NoMoreLandy, if you're needing boots I have a pair of Fox boots which I don't use anymore and am going to be selling. Hardly used as I sold my bike shortly after getting them.  Size UK 11.

To bring this thread back on track - with all due respect to the aspiring MX riders.

My ex's NZ missions have been fast tracked substantially and she leaves on Friday for a week for a recce. She is top of the short list and if all goes well she will look at relocating in late Sept and get her **** sorted - house, car, bank, schools etc and then head back here in Dec for the University break (her position is with a University in Dunedin) then return for the new school/varsity year in early Jan.

Needless to say I am devastated and while I do with a heavy heart support her move it became reality a lot sooner than expected.

Her reasoning being the future for the children, and this week has lead me to believe she is has valid concerns with young children. I know, as I was born in Zambia and spent my early years there and my folks saw what was coming and made the right move at the right time.

Tough times ahead

Really is a shitty position to be in as you want to have the best for your kids.

All I can say is Good Luck, I really hope it works out that you can work something out that benefits everyone.

Sorry this **** storm has hit and hit so quickly. I'm not a parent so I have no idea what it must feel like , and the reality of it - as my brother was saying recently- while his original plan was to come back every year - financially it's not possible.

The good thing is you have technology so you can at least video message them.  If you don't already - create a private instagram type account - share your memories so your kids can share those moments with you - if they're not old enough now - at least when they're older.

and also it's a motivation for you to get out of here too - which is not a bad thing I don't think.

FWIW this hub family (most of)  has your back too - if you need to vent and all that.

Good luck

What is this "midlife" you speak of?

Be patient and Keep an eye on gumtree. Much like DH bikes 2nd hand moto's have almost zero 2nd hand value so you can throw out a VERY cheeky offer.

If you're new to it a 4 stroke 250 or something with a wide ratio gearbox like a WR450 like the nerd suggested will be easiest to manage. I had a YZ250F and that was more than enough bike for me. There aren't any crap bikes so most of the advice you will get is down to personal preference. Don't be put off by ex race bikes. They might have been ridden hard but they will have been well maintained.

Some things to note.

1. You are not the next Eli Tomac.

2. They are quite a lot of work

3. The entire planet hates you when you have one.

4. The actual riding is only 20% of the experience. See point 2

5. Get proper gear. A pair of decent boots is a lot cheaper than ankle reconstruction.

6. It's very time consuming. See point 2. But when you crack open the throttle on a bright sunny day just after the rain it's pretty special.

The KTM 300 is also quite "special". Best comment I have read about that bike is a bloke that said that everytime he climbs onto that bike, it is trying to kill him. Might even have been on this here Bike Hub.

2-strokes are the bomb. When I get spare dough, I would like to get a Yammie 250. And yes, ex race bikes are a good bet. Go to the MX meets. Lots of times the people have bikes there for sale for a song.

They will be - when he gets off the apomorph.... that's going to take several bits of surgery to resolve still - 2 down and lots to come....

Proper boots might well have saved that.

I never ride without proper boots. Not even when commuting on my XT660R to Ape Town. I often get laughed at when I enter the office in my full adventure riding kit and boots. If you happen to see a bloke riding his XT660R in full RST adventure kit and boots, that will be me probably.

Mods we have a problem!

The threads "Is motorcycling allowed?" and "Advice on Divorce" seem to have merged, please separate.

Thank you.

Is 'motorcycling' like 'Netflix and chill'? I am not up to date with these modern euphemisms.

Back on Topic.

Really struggling to tell whether I am friend material or possibly more.

Need to get a user manual.

Just keeping it casual until I am sure but does one take a chance and ask or leave it cool and calm and possibly loose out ?
