let's get back on topic ...

Gravel Bikes:

- MTB technology added to a Road Style frame

- Old School MTB geo which ironically is Nu School CX/Road geo

- Basic basic basic outline : Slacker Angles / Lower BB / Longer Wheelbase / Multi Wheel Compatibility

- the SUV of Road Bikes!

CX Bikes:

- steeped in tradition and old school thinking

- uncool

- road like tendencies

- skinny wheels

- steep geo

- uncool

Dressing your lamb-mutton in an iron maiden is probably the bigger issue here. Thats a pretty advanced "adults toy" for a teenager :D

Hahaha

I'm out. You just broke my brain

CX is traditionally ridden in the European winter months when the asphalt is too wet for road racing. SA never adopted the CX culture but rather the MTB craze in the 90's.

Gravel is the new fashion being pushed upon you by the bike industry similar to the 1x and 2x drivetrains off-roaders are getting bombarded with and maybe disk brakes for the roadies.

Enjoy, and remember "originality always bows to the fashion".

CX bikes are limited to 33c tyres, are made for carrying on the shoulder and have higher BBs.

Gravel have more relaxed geometry, lower BBs and can take bigger tyres, not so racey.

Edit:

Here are two good examples of the differences.

Thanks this helps me too.

I kinda thought that gravel bikes and CX bikes were one and the same until recently...

So two guys are riding next to each other.

One on a CX bike and the other a gravel bike

How do you know which one is the gravel bike and CX bike?

So if you wanted a gravel bike cos your were having mad fantasies about the swartberg grand fondo ... and your budget was entry level what would you look at?

If you have a lot of money .(and your a sucker for marketing, "keeping up with the Joneses"  and what Spes or whoever recons is cool this year.)  . . there is a difference between a Gravel bike and a Cyclocross bike.

If you are like me . . . . your Gravel bike is your Cyclocross is your XC-bike is your Trail bike.

Gravel bikes may be the flavour of the month but BECAUSE CX is steeped in tradition and old school thinking it will ALWAYS be cooler than Gravel bikes.

Just like C-Record and Delta brakes will forever be cooler that E-Tap and a new Dogma dreams of being as cool as a SLX Montello as does my C59 when it sees a Master in Saronni red.

Cool and fashionable are not the same

And mine came in at under R6000.00 with new frame.

I do not worry if there is actually a difference.....is there?

Is there a difference? Yes, nicely documented above.

Does it make a difference to most of us just cruising around on dirt roads? No.
