Yep, I follow Alex Dowsett on various platforms and he regularly mentions altitude as a major factor when discussing his Zwift results.

 

But when the actual racing calender resumes, I suspect the okes who spent their lockdown at altitude will be smiling all the way to the finish line...

 

Agreed.

 

This season is going to ne interesting. 2 overlapping grand tours with overlapping classic all over the place. This will favour the bigger/stronger teams but present opportunity for the little guys. All in 3 months. Gonna be a cracker!

I am not on Zwift, so am ignorant of how it governs racing.

 

What parameters do you have to enter for Zwift to calculate your speed, and how is this monitored to ensure you are racing fairly ?

Just your height and weight.

 

Cheating is supposedly rife on Zwift...google 'weight doping".

 

For the bigger races we need to confirm our weight with a video and provide a second power source as confirmation of our ability. Zwift also has a bunch of algorithms to weed out cheaters - a few pros have fallen foul of these algorithms :-)

Probably derailing the thread, but the biggest difference (specifically for the GT's) will be between the guys that could train outdoors vs those that couldn't (or wouldn't in the case of some Italian pros). 

 

I think you could fake your way through a single day like that Hayman bloke did at Roubaix, but you wouldn't be prepared for 2-3 weeks of day in day out time in the saddle that a GT requires.

 

(Fake in inverted commas. I don't mean any old bloke could sit on his trainer and win a classic, but I mean you can be prepared for a one off hard day with indoor training bookending a solid road preparation. Remember, a lot of the GT riders were only just starting to get their program underway before being forced off the roads, and you need a solid base that indoor training can only sharpen.)

It never even occured to me that altitude can make a difference on Zwift but of course various pros live at different altitudes. Uran and Yates are both altitude dwellers and their lack of result was based on that!

is weight doping like normal doping where you consume things you shouldn't?

 

If so I'm basically Lance Version 2.0  I have been weight doping, fudge and nougat mostly but quite a lot of pasta too

Yeah I guess you can skim a kg or 3 digitally without alerting the algorithm and then ride 2 hours on the trainer with no fan or liquids to "make weight" like boxers do.

 

I really hope that people don't do this as my faith in humanity is already dangerously low! That said I'm sure there are a few psychopaths that already do this.

Nizzolo is Euro Champion!

 

The Italians dominated the last 10km and Nizzolo finished it off nicely. Fortunately for him MVDP got proper boxed in!
