Cyclist shot at cradle...

I always wonder what these thieves know about a R100k Road/TT/MTB bike when they nick one and how the hell they fence it because some of the bikes(especially in that price bracket) are unique to the owner and would stick out like a sore thumb if they tried to sell them anywhere.

I am of the opinion that an expensive (specialist) bike, even if offered for less than R1000, wont be bought by the every day Joe Soap... this begs the question, who are buying these expensive stolen bikes?

Seriously wtf... getting ridiculous

We as cyclists need to work together and try and find a way to stop or make it at least safer ...!!!

Interesting segment from Carte Blanche.

Not sure what the answer is. In a country where it's so easy to behave like this, the criminals really have no motivation not to.

Have a couple of days leave left and thought I would spend some of it cycling in the cradle this week.

I guess I should kick this idea to touch?

Or apply the usual response to such acts in SA?

Nice to see so many wanting to get involved and do something but call me skeptic, I have seen similar initiatives and program's start with a bang and end with a whimper. Time will tell and I'll gladly admit I was wrong.

What's happened is very unsettling but not new as many bike jackings at gun point have been reported in the past especially in MTB scene as you are often out of sight from a road. Only difference is that the trigger was pulled this time around

Despite the incident, the cradle is still one of the safest places to ride your bike in my opinion.

So don't let them win. Keep riding

We didn't sell our houses when they got broken in to, we didn't sell our cars because they got jacked, so correct - we're not going to stop cycling because they too turned violent.

But if there is any easy win here to mitigate the danger, we probably should give it a push.

I don't think this was the best possible outcome for these criminals. They have been getting away with attacking MTB riders out of sight on trails, but the public outrage and media attention this time might help a small amount to make this a less attractive option for a while.

As a cycling community, we should never accept this as the norm, and maybe we need to learn to become better at making a lot of noise when one of us is hurt or killed, whether by gun or by an aggressive or drunk driver.

Politicians hate this kind of noise, so do the police and so do would be criminals. The media in turn loves it, and that attention seems to be one of the few ways to effect change in this country. It won't change the state of the country, but it might make keep our sport a little safer for a little while longer.

If you think the politicians give a **** about white elitist cyclists being mugged then you are sadly mistaken.

I think you're right.

They want to do what they do with the least amount of noise and fuss possible. The last thing they want is anything putting them on the radar like this. They know that generally if they have a gun the victim will hand over the insured goods (whatever the goods may be) and be thankful to walk away relatively unharmed.

This has (in theory anyway) opened a can of worms they didn't want opened. I say in theory because I've seen how easily stuff like this disappears and is forgotten. Not by Jim, obviously, but by the general public. Tomorrow something more shocking will come along somewhere else and so it goes . . . .

Skepticism has killed many an initiative... don't wait let as many as possible get involved.  The question I have is where does one start?  Knocking on the door of the Pedal Power Association, the Cradle Residents Community ... all of them... ???

What is the smallest possible tracking device one can fit/hide on a bike? Maybe insurance companies can come up with an incentive for insured bikes to have such a device fitted. Wont it be nice if the 'taakmag' knocks on the door of a robber within the hour after the robbery.
