ahh okay...

well the 2016 Trail 5 model has: XCM fork, Acera on back, and 3x9... I got excited for nothing.

The mountain bikes at Decathlon Greenstone have comparable specs and similar prices.

You are looking at the 2018 spec, but Makro will be selling 2016 models.

Entry Level 2016, so what in 2016 I(insurance) paid close on R7000 for a Silverback Sola with entry level components with an Air shock - still is a good price.

The thing is that this thread started because someone thought that they were going to get a R13k bike for R4.5k.  It turns out you are actually going to get a R4.5k bike for R4.5k.

If I can find a similar priced bike at a Cannondale dealer I will gladly buy it from them.

He says, casually cruising past the 1000 post mark like it's no big deal. I'd buy a bike from you, no questions asked.

Ha ha I did'nt even notice.

Getting back to the small bike shops that cant get  'dales....

For me its about the relationship with the bike shop, and I have no issues with it being small or cluttered, if I am interested in a specific bike after doing the homework, then discussing it with the mr bike shop, who might have few suggestions  and I don't mind having to wait for it.

Whilst on the other hand, going into a flashy big shop with lots of stock does nothing for me except  make me ponder about the margins necessary to cover all the overheads, but then again I am not your typical consumer. The last few Cannondales I have had have actually been built up from frames sourced here, and parts ordered on line and on ebay.

I haven't actually been bike shopping in a bike shop for ages, except though for the odd spare or consumable  Impey Cycles is where I go.

Is your LBS a small, cluttered type shop? If that's the case, then it could answer your question.

If you care about your brand, you also care how the product is presented to potential buyers, and a nice showroom will elevate your brand.

nice showrooms cost money, where does that money come from ?

you have to charge more for the product, so what happens, the buyer buys online or where ever its cheaper, but they've wasted 3 hours of your saleman's time because you had the nicer shop to view the bike in.

And lets be honest, new premium brand bikes are way overpriced ie top end Scalpel for R200k+ that is verging on the obscene, This is evident in the way the value halves when you walk out the door.

So the presentation is the essential ingredient of the illusion of value. Psychology of Retail Therapy 101.

Spez of course have this all down to a tee in their dedicated stores.

If that's your business model then you're dead (or dying).

"Wasted salesman's time"...? I get way more useful information about my target purchases from online sources than any salesman has ever given me.

Nope, I started this thread because I thought it was strange that Makro would sell Cannondale. I had no idea what specs the bikes had so had no idea whether they were cheap or not.

Very true. Bought my Scalpel at a “small” shop here in the Vaal. They had what I wanted and, although they’re not big or flashy or in a laadie area of Vanderbijlpark, their service levels go above and beyond what is to be expected (bought the bike at 12:00 on a Saturday. Although closing at 13:00 I walked out there at 14:00 after a full check, help with setup, tubeless conversion, etc done). When reading the comments one would never guess, when walking into the shop, that Omnico would supply such a premium brand to this shop. And, to crown all, these guys can get any ‘Dale you want, at a reasonable (within limits) price!

As for the Makro bikes, personally I won’t buy one. The service, advice, chats, laughs and correcting issues I received makes up for the money saved on the bike’s price.

Please note, I don’t ride top of the range bikes. Can’t afford to fork out that type of money. But all the Cannondale LBS’ I’ve had interaction with makes me feel like their most important customer.

Apologies you are correct.  It was almost every other post after your original post where folks were looking online at the 2018 models and making assumptions.

So?

As a consumer, I can spend my money as I like. If it's cheaper online or somewhere else, why the **** would I buy the more expensive one?

Unfortunately that is the general consensus these days. Buy globally and then complain as our local economies go through the floor. By local I mean the LBS, the butcher, the greengrocer etc etc. Historically, by supporting local stores who in turn support other local stores etc, then we have community and local growth. By buying everything for the cheapest possible price from international businesses, we do the opposite.

Not saying you are wrong, just pointing out the inevitable decline of local retail and the centralisation of profit that results.
