Oxidation of spoke nipples?

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

If you are not in the top 10 at every race you do and are talking about rotational weight and a difference of 23 grams per wheel, then jog on.

I really hope you are being ironic and I missed the memo

I was being ironic. I ride a trail bike with beefy tyres, gram saving is not a penchant of mine.

I was being serious about never having had an issue with alu nipples though. Maybe I just use decent wheel builders.

Too true. Had my wheels built in Pta before I even knew about alu or brass nipples - just chose hubs and rims. Anyway, shop went with alu, no corosion at all. Moved to Somerset West at the beginning of this year and the nipples are not looking so good - may need a rebuild soon with brass (may get some carbon rims while I'm at it).

a friend of mine and me bought the xt 26" wheelset like 5/6 years back with the red alu nipples neither of us olied them . 4 months later his were corroding mine nothing .. cleaned his up and oiled them no more real problems . i did mine just for the sake... 2 years later nothing..

we both then 2/3 years later bought the bontrager assymetricals with red alu nipples .. same thing 1/2 a year in his corroding ... he uses a pressure washer lives in hout bay ... i brush my bike moslty , litely wash with hose if really dirty .. live in jhb .. u tell me ? haha ...

Which type of rider is that?

Asking for a friend (who thinks he has brass nipples)

The type who somehow manages to avoid rocks, potholes or crashes.

Or when they do get out of shape it's to the point that the rim needs replacing anyway.

well they go way faster at the coast for whatever reason .. sewing machine oil 2x in 5 years 0 problems .

Thats what I do.

To be honest I use sewing machine oil to lube everything.

I get loads of wheels to repair "broken spokes". Mostly these are Roval wheels (alloy and carbon) with alloy nipples which have broken their heads off, or the nipples themselves have disintegrated from the galvanic corrosion. When one tries to turn the nipples they simply fall apart....

When I'm asked to build with alloy nipples, I grease the spoke threads to make future truing possible.

I have been through three sets of Bonti Wheels before, and each one of them failed at the nipples, and then two of the three also failed in the rim well with nice long cracks.

The Bonti Wheels do ride well though!

Thanks!

Friend is greatly relieved, he has a set of Stan’s mtb rims from 2011 and only recently did I have to tighten 1 ” etter ” of a front wheel spoke about 1 turn

Ammonia based sealant also seems to accelerate the corrosion.

Not according to Luescher Teknik  who has done a 2 year test....look up the link I posted earlier
