I think it's to cut down on risk as teams fly in into the feeding zone to get bottles and go again. So def better for the safety around it. As with last year it also gives the ladies more time to go for a nature break as there where no toilets for the ladies in the fast mix teams and they went behind cars with doors open and towels hold around them, us men are easy we just sling it out and do it.

LOL, I'll be careful if I see you at the stop. Or perhaps I'll recognize you straight away from this comment

Not difficult to understand.

You get 15 minutes time out once the 6th rider crosses the first mat. If the first rider hasn’t crossed the second mat before 15 minutes your time starts again. If he crosses after 5 minutes, then the timeout is only 5 minutes.

Well if you ask my son what a 15 min timeout means, he will tell you he is not allowed to leave his room for 15 mins or I ad 5 mins to his time

Not difficult to understand. :)

Hello good people.
Anyone short a rider?

A riding mate is coming down for gees, but has the bike packed and is good for 5.30ish fairly easily.
He'll probably moan at me if/once I commit him to an unplanned 180km tomorrow, but will be eager and thank us all after if he does ride.

It was my first Maluti double 90. Great event. Had a good day out, untill the climb. Hamstring crampfest from there.

Will be back next year, with a semi compact crankset.

This is a great little event. I say little in that it's still finding its feet, but give it a couple of years and it will to Joburgers what DC is to Capetonians.

It's a deceptively tough route - and not just on the body. The concentration required to avoid all those potholes is quite exhausting!

Will I be back? I think so - it's a long way to go, but this event is only going to get better.

Well done to everyone who finished, and a special well done to those that didn't get off the bike through the Golden Gate reserve.

Looking after kids at Kiara Lodge was awesome and myself and kids were proud that mom got the QOM (and rode back down to help the team :)) and her team won the Women's race.

What a scenic area!! Just a pity about the rough and narrow roads for cyclists.

I've done 3 DC' so would have loved to do this one to compare but only fair Jo gets a turn to race instead of carrying and looking after the little ones :)

It would be interesting if all top women do the women's race rather than the mixed to see how close they could get to the men's team times. But maybe better for them they don't :)

Well done to all finishers!!

It's bad enough being chicked on the way up the climb (I'm at least used to that), but the last remaining part of my soul left my body when Jo came past me, going the wrong way!

Germiston Red Train did pretty well. Started out with a seemingly weak seeding at 06:55, and promptly started ticking the teams down. And down. And down some more, until we caught team 119 (I suspect a few teams may not have made the start or withdrew from the event). By that time we realized we were at the head of the race! A police escort and a motorbike marshal to ourselves.

Pit stop latest approx. 7 minutes (we aimed for 5 minutes), but good organization and speedy changed to clothing and nutrition meant we were first out the gate and had the police escort to ourselves again.

Then the dreaded and feared GG Reserve beckoned, and we started losing soldiers. At the top of the snaking first big climb we "lost" the lead to Build-It, Heneways and Garrun, being forced to make pit stops for emergency refuels and to regroup our eventual top-7.

KOM segment proved to be the toughest challenge of them all, not very long but unforgiving if you mistime a gear change.

The end was in sight, our goal time was still within reach, and as we reached the very last nasty sting going up the hill into the square, we rode in side by side, happy that we managed to conquer the event in a faster time than our last attempt.

Nice report. You do realise that there was 15 minute timeout for the pitstop, so need to rush. But then, being the first team on the road is also an advantage.

I think it was an awesome event .

As a team we decided to finish with all 12 together . We were a mixed team .

We did this and our time was 5h35  .

Those 2 climbs in Golden Gate were brutal  but very rewarding once over the top .
