What is this? (Honest question, have not done so many race to know all the signs.)

Its considered group ride etiquette to indicate that you have take your bottle out. This lets other riders behind you know just to keep an extra eye out incase a bottle gets dropped.

Many many a clavicle has been broken due to a dropped bottle.

DO NOT SHOW ME YOUR BOTTLE WHEN YOU TAKE A DRINK UNLESS YOU WANT ME TO TAKE IT FROM YOU!!!

??  Explain please ,  are they trying to show you they are drinking for you to be more aware, never heard of this

The biggest problem with timed events/races is that everyone in front of me is an idiot and everyone behind me is an arsehole.

It's not like the cheats will be getting their entry fee back ^_^ So not sure what would drive any apathy wrt digging out the cheats, other than they not having an automated means of so.

Often it's a case of they started training too late and their mates have been racing/training all winter.. So their mates get their seedings up for them in races so that they can start together at the "big" races, So that he isn't starting at the back where he actually should be!! Also, I'm sure MANY guys will agree there are huge ego's about in cycling and when your mates you ride with on weekends are 1A or B seeded riders, why would you want to start in 3K for example?? It's an egotistical type of cheating me thinks because you have a high seeding so friends think you're a badass cyclist whereas in reality you're actually just a bad cyclist!!

Again, NOT all cyclists are egotistical and many couldn't give a damn what their seeding is, butt there are MANY who are, who have the latest kit and best bikes and feel they would rather cheat their way to a good seeded group than earn it!!

Seeding etc and all these things are new to us so forgive me if I'm wrong but here are the times off the racetec app

There is no need to show people that you are drinking. Just take you bottle and drink. Don't try and knock the guy off the bike riding next to you. The person behind you is not going to react any differently, and he can see that you are taking your bottle out and putting it back.

In fact it is those two motions that create the most instability in inexperienced riders, so you were a problem before you showed me your bottle.

found all across the world

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/nov/30/deeply-shameful-258-runners-caught-cheating-in-shenzhens-half-marathon

Organisers of the Shenzhen half-marathon have said the 258 participants caught cheating during Sunday’s race will not be able to run away from punishment for their actions.

As many as 18 runners were found to wearing fake bibs, and three were running on behalf of others. They face lifetime bans from the event, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reported.

The 237 others, most of whom had taken shortcuts during the race and were caught out by traffic cameras and local photographers, could be banned for two years.

No! Period, there are many reasons why this is so, not least of which is that I do not know if you are shouting at me or not.

You are wanting to pass so you make the the judgement calls.

Have you ever heard hold your line in the pro, proam or cat racing peleton?

Have you watched any on board videos of the pro peleton?

Fair share of shouting/swearing/pushing/elbows involved.

Honestly bud you are coming across as a bit of a deek

So basically, f#$k common courtesy?

No thats not what he's saying. He's saying drink your sht and be done with it and get those hands back on the bars!

What's up with that silly lifting the bottle first, then drinking. The longer the hand is off the bars the more unstable you are.

Its very easy to spot who doesn't belong in the bunch - the Zwifters out for a reality check - they can't even reach for a bottle without trying to cause an accident so they have top tube bag and camelbaks in A bunch

BS there is no such group etiquette. Are you trying to write it into the "unwritten rules"?

I remember the couple who hid in Newlands forest and waited for the race to return on the same road when the race went over Ou-Kaapse.

Idiot didn't notice that the pro-group had split and hopped back into the race to finish with the second group a couple of minutes ahead of A-batch where he had started.

He stuck to his story that he had ridden off the front of A and caught up with the pros, despite no one having seen him.

Girlfriend was then also bust.

I wonder what happened to them?

I have never been taught to do this, but then I have only riding on the road for 35 years. It is so irritating, I am with the OP. And dangerous.

Jago and Ronel Liss. Special. Opened up a whole can of worms including cheating in running races and lying about qualifications to get into Masters studies...
