When selling other stuff thats also why I prefer Facebook Marketplace... you can sort of profile the people responding to your ad before you even respond to them... although the listing/search function for items is terrible.

the facebook marketplace "search" function is more like a filter function - it always returns everything as a result, so typing something in just filters out more nonsense than otherwise

Amen! Impossible to find anything...

Sounds more like specific people not interested in humans or socialising and just want to get "bargains" or trades.

I do agree that your description aligns with my own gumtree/olx experiences. I would hazard a guess that the onus falls on the bikehub users/community members to mould it how they want it, rather how they receive it. Bikehub is after all a community platform with selling features and not a selling platform!

That is all easier said than done - if it isn't against the rules (it may be), a thread with usernames to avoid that lowball or aren't courteous... Just realised I described what the rating system was designed for.

Just a shame almost no one uses it. Maybe the rating system should be promoted more by the admins, by displaying a message or something at the top of every classified page or something.

Listen, I will pay the full R1200, but its for my uncle, he is on a oil rig. Can I settle with ebay?

I had to have a chuckle on Monday.  My mate is a Heavy Lift Rigger working in Sabetta in Russia on a Gas Line project.  He wanted to buy a Bike which was advertised on FB - Full Suspension Scott - for R50k I think so when he comes out on Rotation he has a bike here - all perfectly legit and he can definitely afford it.  He says the guy was not keen to even let me go and look at it for him

Apparently now its also "sold".......

I've had a guy pitch up with a brand new mode of transport with all the extras visibly added - then look at and insult my bike condition (which I described accurately and truthfully - and had photos of all angles including stone chips) at a very good price, and then brag about his expensive toys at home whilst telling me that my bike is actually out of his budget.

Then proceeded to tell me he needs to go look at other bikes since mine is "more used than he thought". Then kept messaging me that he is still looking at other bikes; "before making me an offer" and so it was with great pleasure that I could reply: sorry, since you've been taking your sweet time, the bike has been sold and you missed out on a bargain. Good luck finding a bike in your "budget" especially with your tyre-kicking manner.

I comment away on adds that are stupidly priced, seem dodgy or are incorrectly spec'ed based on the pics provided in the add :P

Something happened when the couches disappeared.........and the comments to keep the adds honest!

It's the nature of the beast. You want to sell something expect low ball offers, expect guys to leave you hanging, expect guys to want it, then disappear.

Serious buyers tend to usually just phone or whatsspp immediately. By the time i get to reading PM's the item is usually sold/on hold already, and courteously have to type that they were a bit late to the party.

I do always try to have the bests pics possible from my side already on the advert, accompanied by full and honest descriptions,  so to eliminate as much uncertainty as possible. has been working fine for me.

I DO wish everybody took the time to rate though...

you should try selling cars for a living. This is basically a daily occurrence.

I usually ask people to rate me after the sale because it's just not something people always think of, especially the less frequent users. I also try to rate buyers, and then they usually respond in kind.

If someone has 4 or 5 good reviews that puts me at ease.

Is there an issue with pm's reaching the sellers?

I've enquired after a few items for my new bike build recently, some have replied within minutes, some have not acknowledged at all..

A-greed. I have given 20, received 7. Maybe I should go and delete all the un-reciprocated feedback.

My response to an add is directly proportional to how badly I want it:

Phone - I want it now, take my money, what is your bank account details! (I bought a bike like this once only based on the photos, still the best deal I have done to date)

WhatsApp - I am seriously interested but just want to check a couple of things before I commit

PM - I might be interested, tell me more... Can you do a better price?

Comment - There is something wrong in your add and I want potential buyers to be aware of it.

But that's just me...

There is a huge overhaul coming on the Classifieds here.

We all need to rate the buyers and sellers though. As more traffic comes through the site, more unsavory bodies will unfortunately be dragged through the net.

I personally struggle to deal with buyers. Post an add, then someone texts at 11pm saying 'I'll give you R800'... Not, 'Hi, it's Mike Jones here. Just wondering if the XYZ is still available. I have R800 to give you. Really keen on the item.' or some such.

Guys also tend to think it's ok to call at any time.

08:00 till 19:00 or it's just rude if you don't know me. Seriously

thanks for that...I always rate the buyers but it never actually occurred to me to "coerce"a rating out of them  . gonna try it.
