How unlucky can you get!

Recommended Posts

So, had a left knee miniskus done 4 weeks back, two weeks back had Lumbar Epidural Steroid Injections for lower back pain(old rugby injury).A week back I completely tore my right bicep mucle from the bone at work and had a Distal bicep tendon repair the same day!How on earth will I be ready for K2C in September?Getting up in winter at 4 in the morning just go take it easy on a exersize bike at the gym is a lot of effort with a arm in sling.Thinking of buying a cheap exersize/spinning bike to start putting in the hours at home.Anyone had this bad luck and how did you get back?

I agree rest is what is needed . The race will  be there next year . I tore my bicep muscle and damaged the rotator  cup in my shoulder and did not rest it . I was out training the next day ( because i'm a die hard ) and it felt ok . Two or three days later i couldn't lift my arm and was battling on rough terrain and rides over 50 km . Needless to say i battled on and three months later it is only now feeling better and not worrying much . So take the advice and rest with all your damage you need lots of it .

Last January I rolled my ankle by doing a run everyone told me I shouldn't do, as I was prepping for another big event and the run was too risky. Did it, and destroyed my LEFT ankle. About 2 weeks into wearing my moonboot and using my crutches while crutching myself down the passage at home, I manage to catch my RIGHT small toe on the crutch on the swing through - bending it 90 degrees - breaking it. Blue and purple toe. So now had a bust left ankle that I couldn't really put weight on, and a right foot... that I really couldn't put weight on.

You must be good at wheelchair wheelies now?

To be honest depending on what you want to achieve at k2c, it's really not a difficult ride did 4 training rides last year before the race and finish comfortably. I weigh about 100 kg and I am 176cm so not a small guy.

Thanx guys, seems im not the only one who had some freakish bad luck! Will start slow and see how I feel when the time comes.Did it last year as part of our famaly holiday(k2c) and loved it. Want to be fit enough to enjoy it again and not just suffer thru it.Haha-It is amazing how much weight you gain while you cant train but still eating like you train!

Willie, I'm in a very similar boat than yours.

I'm also doing k2c this year - it will be my 2nd one.

About a month ago I broke the head of my radius bone. My arm is still in a sling for another 2 weeks before going back to see the Orthopaedic surgeon for a follow up.

I still don't see myself back to riding in the next 4-6 weeks due to pain still present in my elbow, plus having kept it in a sling at 90 degrees for so long now.

To make matters worse, during my fall I landed on my hands first, so my wrists were also quite sore at the time. This didn't seem to be my biggest concern until about a week ago.

Being back at work and doing most things left handed has caused my left wrist to become incredibly painful and at night I can hardly think of anything other than how k@k sore my wrists are. Now imagine me on my mtb taking the vibrations.

To add insult to injury I've picked up 6kg.

For now I'm back at gym doing leg work and the wattbike to get things going again.

Don't get a cheap exercise bike rather look at an entry level smart trainer and slap an old 26er onto it: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/180544-entry-level-smart-trainer/ - I typed some essays back in the past

But ya, your body needs a breather

Whatever you do, do not go outside when there is lightning. With your run of luck.......

Had cervical fusion surgery 6 weeks ago today. Spent the last 5 weeks riding Zwift (in a neck brace), BUT I had the luxury of being booked off for 3 of those 5 weeks. Due to the nerve compression I haven’t been able to ride outside all year.

This weekend I can finally ride outside, now I got flu so I can’t even ride on the trainer. Transbaviaans coming up soon...

I feel your pain. Also second getting a trainer instead of an exercise bike.

  • 3 weeks later...

So 3weeks after my bicep op I fell at work, tearing it again clean from the bone!So I suppose that answers the question for me- wont be doing the k2c or the w2w this year.

Maybe get your middle ears/eyesight checked....

Really Sorry about your misfortune. I know how frustrating it is to try and recover, but the goalposts keep moving.
