Hydrate more than usual the day before and the morning of. Also as said, salt tablets.

I’ve read that drinking water could dilute the sodium ratio in ones system, which has an even worse effect on cramps. So hydration is not just water but also electrolytes and possibly carbo-loading. Remember that people are different, so while carbs are good for some they aren’t for others.

But, that’s the opinion of the person writing the info I read. I’ve tried it, and I’ve felt better doing it than not.

Exactly why I started feeling cramps after I drank about 1 L of water at the M1 water point - it was so warm and the ice water tasted soooo good -  but when the cramps came just before Kyalami, I realised that it was all the water that I took in .   Luckily I had more than half a bottle of Cyto Power left in my one bottle and that really saved me from the cramps -  the Cyto power really works well for that purpose.

For me, it's an expensive venture to head up to jhb for a ride that's not even 100km, and no offense to the jhb guys, but it's riding through jhb. I'd rather spend my money on a race where I'm riding somewhere new/scenic/ not through a city.

2yrs now we come from Germany and do it :)

I'd admit it's not just for the race, but we make sure that it includes that Sunday. I think that after all these years, the people of JHB have embraced the race and I feel the atmosphere around the course is awesome.

It is a hard race. Might not have an ocean or real mountains but trust me there is proper hills in JHB. Will have to ride a bit more next year...

We can maybe make it a sticky post or a new topic, then we can add the changes each year, nice way of keeping record.

Unfortunately my Bikehub super powers doesn't include making this a sticky post. I'll start a new thread, once I have all the routes done, plus some additional information that makes it a thread full of event data.

For now, here are the routes I've saved on Strava - not my favourite app for routes.

Another edit: corrections to some of the Strava routes needs to be done - the export shows some anomalies. Also, the manual ones were done based on memory (there could be some discrepancies that will be corrected if needed).

Good old Rehidrate, cheap but effecticve. I always ride with a bottle of water and a bottle of Rehidrate and no other fancy race drink or energy mixture. Works wonders.

The story I heard was that the land was given to a muslim group (I stand under correction so please dont flame me) by one of the early presidents of SA. They are allowed to develop the land but are never allowed to sell it.

It could be completely wrong, I'm just relaying hearsay, but it explains the 99 year lease story.

I heard something similar - but they found a legal loophole - it's an automatically renewing lease?

Weren't some of those Waterfall Estates found out to have been illegally connected to the electricity and/or water supply?

Thanks for all the hard work, this is super. Was interesting to see how it has evolved!

What I can add is that you cannot think today that they used some of the roads used in the earlier editions. I actually rode my first in 2002 and cannot imagine that we went through some of the places. In that time witkoppen was still a single lane road. Quite nostalgic to think of it now.

In 2004 I rode elites and we did an extended route, looking at the map now I think we continued straight with Witkoppen up until Hendrik Potgieter, then went accross to the N14 and merged with the normal route on the N14. I know there was a break that got away 20 km in already and by the time we did the extra bit, everyone was just riding to finish, as the break was 10 min ahead.
