Just entered.

Odd that entries are still open; I guess interest/entries must be down...?

1st time for me, sort of.. hopefully it doesn't blow out this year...

Not 100% sure if I'll be able to make it down there, but I'm not waiting till I know for sure and then doing the substitute thing again....

Well done on entering. Interest has waned over the last few years due to price, weather and the odd protest. Mainly I think it has just become too costly for most non-capetonians to travel here, stay over, restaurants etc. That aside, if you do end up riding, you won't notice a difference in dropped attendance. The vibe is a jol, and the whole way to be cheered on by the crowds of spectators is quite special.

90min is better than only after the racing groups had already left...

I had a thought last night that that might happen to SCT today. Instead they called it early

Flip I was cross that day, Yeah we really struggled to get through the start but once we had it wasn't too bad. The SMS popped up on my Garmin just after UCT and I was like no ways they stopping us, must just be for people who haven't started. Then a bike marshal told us. Then we got to end of the blue route and had drinks(energy drinks) with all the Elites and Vets.

Interest in the event is definitely waning. Not only ito entries but also all the additional stuff for us out of towners.

I remember when I entered my first ARGUS in 2012 you had to book accommodation, car rental, flights and bike transfer first thing when entries opened in September to avoid paying an arm and a leg, and also to secure all the necessities because of high demand.

For the event this year, I booked all the additionals last week - really cheap accommodation in Sea Point (and lots left for those who haven't booked), reasonable flights (R1500 return - in the past they would go for R3000 plus 6 weeks before the event) and all the rest.

I have said before that I prefer the more chilled ARGUS - it makes for a safer ride and you can actually get a coffee on the customary Saturday morning warm up ride to Houtbay without having to wait until the start on Sunday :P

The one thing I find odd about the CTCT is that they still do zero marketing. You would think that with interest waning & the cancelled & shortened events the organisers would make some kind of effort to market the event &  attract numbers again (especially the younger generations) - but other than a few FB updates - nothing.

Very shortsighted imo

Maybe the perceived crisis is not as bad as we all think it is. I wonder if anyone on here know the real details of how the finances and performance of the event actually look year on year compared to a few years ago.

Should the do more marketing, perhaps, but i doubt an institution that have been doing a very successful event for 40+ years will let such an event die out.

They still get the amount of entries that put all other events in this country to shame, presumably if they were really worried they would do something about it
