90% of people on  e bikes are lazy. they'll continue their downward trajectory and end up back on the couch in no time at all. 9% are gravity guys using them as "shuttles" and 1% will draw inspiration from the added fitness and buy a normal bike.

Wow those figures are astounding 90%, 9% and 1%. Do you know who did that survey? My view is the figures might only apply to Europe and USA, and not really to South Africa.

Perhaps if you cite the source i can go read the survey and check?

I like the post "race" explanation of the time splits on each section, to clearly show that an e-bike doesn't have the upper hand on all sections of the trail, eg. 25Km/h limit vs a rider capable of riding faster.

Now to find a link that actually posts - eventually figured it out.

No need for sarcasm. We all know that 73.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I think the whole getting older, unfit and fat people into the sport with ebikes is BS. My dad was 63, weight 130kg and was as unfit as you can get. One day he said, i want to do the argus and bought a bike and started TRAINING.First week he did daily 5km rides and slowly progressed. He lost 18kg and did his Argus having a ball. And he did it on a normal bike.

E bike is a quick fix for the lazy.

Burn away.

I made this same point in another thread and was call ignorant.

I agree with you.

Just back from USA this is the E MTB BIKES fastest category of bike sales in the USA and I believe it’s closely followed by Europe mountain bike are selling faster then any new trend in the last 20 years according to national sales agents Specialised and Giant bikes I met at Richardson bike store ( biggest in the USA) all bike parks opening up to them as they make no difference with your E bike for you on a normal bike. It’s a magnificent right there and they were E bike is a normal bikers.

The states have also led the international mobility scooter sales by a large margin,or a huge width. Just because things happen doesn't mean they're a good thing, or as the result of good thing.

"And Americans are sick — much sicker than many realize. More than 100 million adults — almost half the entire adult population — have pre-diabetes or diabetes. Cardiovascular disease afflicts about 122 million people and causes roughly 840,000 deaths each year, or about 2,300 deaths each day. Three in four adults are overweight or obese. More Americans are sick, in other words, than are healthy."

They don't engage in enough physical activity and eat too much as it is. If ebikes get more of them riding, good. But mostly they'd be better off on normal bikes. I don't ride a bike because I'm going to win anything. I'm never even going to do a 94.7 sub-3. Ever. I just don't have the genetics. But I bike because of what it does for my health (physical and mental). And I use a bike within my abilities and limitations (we're all differently "abled"....or "disabled" relative to someone else who is more blessed). Ebikes have their place but in far too many instances they add little but lazy convenience and yet more environmental detritus.

Question: When an ebiker participates in an event, doesn't he feel a bit skaam and diminished in his achievement? I sure would.
