Cape Town: Best road rides when SE is blowing?

From the northern suburbs I would cycle out to Franschoek via Stellenbosch, and then come back with the tailwind (for most of the route)

When I was still at school we would regularly ride from Claremont to Gordons Bay early morning, catch a goof or two in the sea and then fly back in the afternoon. Was fun.

Interestingly, we would always make sure to go past the dynamite factory because the trucks would drop chunks of sulphur on the road and we used that in our gunpowder  cocktails

Climbing fest in Bishops court and Constantia around Kirstenbosch and Nek.

Like Cippo says.

Many steep loops in the leafy suburbs on mostly quiet roads. Safe - every 3rd house has a guard and the embassies every 2nd block have even more. On the Bishopscourt side of the hill the Southeaster goes right over the top, which is one of the reasons property there will cost even a millipede all its arms and legs! Also gives you an opportunity to see where the old money lives......and why Juju thinks expropriation without compensation is such a great idea. :whistling: If you can think about stuff like that when your lungs are trying to escape through your mouth........but maybe not enough for 3 hours.

I would say shorten the time but up the intensity.....and for that the Bishopscourt and the upper parts of Constantia area (where the younger money lives) is perfect

Absolutely - can string together a good series of ups and downs without having to battle the wind here - often do this in the mornings.

Plus one for Constsntiw hills. Monterey, price and all are quiet

Speed over distance has slowed things down a lot

totally, been a Game changer. Used to see all sorts of crazy driving on a Sunday afternoon, now it's follow the law.

I even sail to Mykonos with my bike on board and ride back as it's easier than sailing into the BBC se!

Straight into the SE. Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, then things hot up in glen Cairn. 600W for 7min

then onto Cape Point and let the wind blow me to Ocean View.

Chappies is interesting and Suikerbossie the wind always blows in your face. then through to Town and back to s/burbs via M4.

Superb!

Beats a windless day in Gauteng anyday

Whose power meter has your garmin synced with?

Slight hi-jack but how safe is the West Coast road for cycling? I know there is a big shoulder but the road can be pretty busy and cars travel at high speed, almost like a national road - a bit weary of riding out that way, especially on my own

My comment was tongue in cheek. I would never ride that road. I used to 25 years ago, but then times were different. People drive like complete lunatics on the R27

The part between Melkbos and the Atlantis turn off is regular mayhem with taxis, buses and assorted idiots all competing to sweep the yellow shoulder clear of cyclists. Past the Atlantis turn off it is much better, except that the speed devils come into their own up to the Langebaan turn off. Oh, and I forget about the ski boat trailers that are much wider than the tow vehicle and the driver still thinking that he can fit it through the same little gap between you and the oncoming 18 wheeler truck. That road freaks me out, despite the safe appearance, the great surface and the wide shoulder.

Yup, forget the R27. Way too dangerous, loads of cars travelling in the yellow lane.
