The only way to save by building up a bike is to get deals on lots of stuff, the time this takes really needs to be taken into account. Ja sure you can piece together a bike RRP for R25k, but it will take you six months to do it.

R35k complete bike will definitely be better specced than the R35k DIY build unless you build with a pile of secondhand components.

I did the calculations when I built my Evil. I wanted it completely custom and the costs added up very quickly. I was lucking in that I could take across about R10k in components from my old bike.

Really frothing to get out on my own set of wheels thus based on some of the comments around building at a reasonable price taking some time, going full build seems to be a better option. However, definitely something I would want to attempt one day... especially one of those bad ass steel hardtails.

So far its a shootout between Giant Trance 3, Norco Fluid FS 1 and Silverback AL 2.

In terms of build and fitness, think Im somewhere in the middle not a tank nor a beanstalk :) 1,82m tall at 80kgs... fitness at the moment average speed around Safari Wolf trail 13kmph and the 22km loop at Red Barn 16kmph.

Probably not the right place but thought I'll share anyway... pic from my ride today.

I'd honestly take a look at the Titan Cypher 120 in those as well. Especially if you can sneak a 2020 model.

The Norco ticks all the boxes for me. Especially with the dropper and 130/120mm travel.

I’d be swiping my card already if I was in the market for a bike in that price range.

I have the Fluid FS1, I was looking for a Trance before I got the Norco, but the Norco spec is a fair bit better, and it is cheaper from what I recall, I am 1.83 and 100kg, couldn't be happier.

I could maybe meet you at Wolwespruit or Red Barn on the weekend and you can take it for a bit of a spin

Bike Comparison.xlsxThrew the Titan Cypher into the ring as well and drew up the attached comparison table... as expected the bikes seem very similar from a geo and spec perspective.

The Norco and Silverback seem to have a slightly better spec in terms of drive train and from what I have heard the revelation fork on the Norco is good as well.

@Chadvdw67 I might take you up on your offer... leaning towards the Norco just concerned about warranty and post purchase support given its a less popular brand in SA? Is this something to be concerned about or am I just being paranoid...

Might chuck in the Al 3 as well in your spreadsheet.

Seen them for around 27-32k

Oh and thanks as it saved me the hassle of drawing up one. Owe you a beer.

The 2020 FS1 comes with a Pike, not the Revelation, so it is even better value!

I have not needed any spares for my bike as yet, but I doubt it will be a problem, I am seeing more and more Norco's out and about, so I think the brand is growing nicely, so I dont think parts will be a problem

OOO!! Maybe that will convince me into buying one.

Support isn't an issue, Cycles United as an agent are pretty sorted across the country with a collective of bike shop dealers who are also essentially shareholders.

Ian and co at Mellow Velo are known to turn around bike builds for customers in record time.
