Hi all

I'm new to CT and want to avoid being skelled out in person cause that's just unpleasant so:

I always pick up his poop and my dog is my absolute best MTB buddy.   Am I going to get shouted at if I bring him with me to ride at Tokai?

Thanks for any answers!

Yes.

But, you can take them to Lower Tokai, which is where the walking / green belt loops are. But in teh Tokai MTB trails section, nope. I wouldn't want to, either, as it's home to babboons. Dogs and babs don't get on. At all.

Alas.  Sucks for female riders where dog = protection.

Ok, I'll go elsewhere, thanks for the honest answer

The reason dogs are not allowed in Upper Tokai is because it is home to a big baboon troop. Most conflict between dogs and baboons, the dog ends up getting severely mauled by a big male. You really don't want to take your dog there, for the dogs sake.

Safety is not a concern in Upper Tokai. There are rangers on duty and access is controlled. Whatever issues there were, got sorted out a few years ago.

About women riders. If you don't want to ride alone, consider joining the Trail Angels. Mrs Beattbox has lots of good things to say about them. They have groups to cater for both beginners and advanced riders that do regular Tokai outings

As for taking your dog along when riding, the whole of the front of Table Mountain is open to both dogs and bikes. All the way from Rhodes Memorial to the City Bowl.

Hi ScaredOnline

Firstly Welcome to the BikeHub and to the Southern Suburbs/Peninsula.

Secondly I will confirm what the others have said regarding upper Tokai and dogs. It's a definite no and again mostly because of the Baboons. I grew hearing some horror stories and as a kid saw Baboons being aggressive to the dogs we had at that time. Thankfully a large sheet of glass between them and our beloved labrador and poodle (our dogs being in our home, the Baboons outside). Lower Tokai is very dog friendly and a nice place for you to allow your doggo to have some out the home exploration fun.

Thirdly get yourself a My Activity Card (costs R625 for a year iirc) if you haven't already. You'll need one for the portions for which SANParks have responsibility, which is most of the mountain. The Green belt is free but that only really runs from Tokai to Southern Cross drive.

Fourth if you are worried about safety join groups like the Trail Angels. I'm also sure that a number of the bike shops may know of clubs that you could join in order to find ladies to ride with.

Lastly, and most importantly, have fun riding the awesome trails that we have here in the Cape!

Why you scared? We can't even see a picture of you. As said no dogs. It is as DJR said... the baboons. If I was in CT I would happily ride with you. But I am in the Tankwa doing a tour. Enjoy the trails.

that wasn't weird! Did BH create a new hook-up protocol that I missed?

Right now is the best time to ride in the reserve. With all the tour busses not operating it's AMAZING in there right now.

I heard that there's also waves there for surfers....but no-one actually knows exactly where...maybe next time you cycle there, you can scope the place out and get back to me so me and my mates (I'm a surfer and know how to surf and so do my mates!) can go catch some waves!

Edit...where's that damn font now...thought I had it saved somewhere...ah well...

We did a ride there on Sunday morning (amazing weather) and saw probably 8 or 9 surfers at what I think was Platboom beach?

No there are no good waves in the reserve.

I know for a fact there are none at Black Rocks and Platboom.

I'm also 100% sure that you won't find good waves on the Ollifant's bos road. Just before Olifant's bos.

I'm also 100% sure that when there's a huge westerly swell that you won't find a world class right hander at Buffels.

Also if you are a wind surfer you most certainly won't find good sailing at Platboom. Especially in a South Easter.
