Now that we need to wear masks everywhere, I would like a thumb print phone again

My 11 unlocks fine with a mask in the correct position.

I disliked it initially (having to remember passwords, or move the mask down), then Apple pushed an update that resolved the face ID problem - at least for me, that is.

same here. Can unlock my phone with my mask on. Not sure why everyone complains about the mask causing an unlock issue

It was an issue prior to THAT update in May/June

Was added in the 13.5 update

https://support.apple.com/en-za/HT210393#135

iOS 13.5

iOS 13.5 speeds up access to the passcode field on devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask and introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities. This update also introduces an option to control automatic prominence of video tiles on Group FaceTime calls and includes bug fixes and other improvements.

Face ID and Passcode

Simplified unlock process for devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask

Passcode field automatically presented after swiping up from the bottom of the Lock screen when you are wearing a face mask

Also works when authenticating with the App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iTunes, and other apps that support signing in with Face ID

Exposure Notification

Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities

FaceTime

Option to control automatic prominence on Group FaceTime calls so video tiles do not change size when a participant speaks

Emergency Services

Option to automatically share health and other essential information from your Medical ID with emergency services when you place an emergency call (US only)

This update also includes bug fixes and other improvements.

Fixes an issue where users may see a black screen when trying to play streaming video from some websites

Addresses an issue in the share sheet where suggestions and actions may not load

Some features may not be available for all regions or on all Apple devices. For information on the security content of Apple software updates, please visit this website: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201222

I’m paying R799 for 24 months vs R699 for a 36 month contract, plan to keep my 11 for up to 4 years.

It will still be perfect after 4 years.

I went from the 6 to the X and I only did so because a family member needed a phone.

Iphones last forever and they dont seem to slow down with age and updates.

Im not so sure of the iPhone 12 anymore, this video really shows how underhanded Apple are getting.

The implications are that only Apple can perform repairs on the phone, this doesnt sit well with me considering they can charge whatever they want if only they can do repairs.

I saw that.. and its if its is what it seems it has been coming for awhile..apple is a big player in the fight against right to repair

but for an interesting perspective watch the video below ( please note Louis is a big apple Basher)

I used to enjoy Louis Youtube channel but then the Apple bashing just started getting too much.

I do agree that its ridiculous that you can buy a device which you have so little rights over.

Apple has for a long time been changing things in the same way Microsoft did with Windows, you dont "own" the device, you pay for the right to use it but you never fully own it.

The result is that if you dont use the device in the way they want then they can disable all manner of things and you have no recourse.

Early days. Someone will figure out the way past registering components and the ability to repair will be available to third party repair shops.

There is always a way.

Apple is also investing huge amounts in supporting independent small and medium businesses to become authorised service centres and has done for a long time.

You have to look at this from all sides. As has been said above, if you're willing to invest in becoming and apple accredited repair shop it will pay off.

Its apples way of ensuring their product quality remains intact.

It also to an extent will cut down on stolen phones. Hear me out.

As with cars, often electronics are stolen, torn down to their components and those sold off to "repair" places.

Modern cars wont just accept a piece of electronic equipment in it without being told to. Replace a headlamp on a car with the identical part but from another car and it will do much the same as the phones, show you the finger.
