Can a minimum sentence (let's say 5 years) be introduced for leaving the scene of an accident (except in an ambulance). before police, etc are on the scene?

So "Hit and Run" start with minimum and then the rest gets added on...

Also investigate drivers actions prior to accident with most likely expenses incurred at a bar / pub / club (CCTV / bank transaction, etc.)

What are the thoughts on being able to report drivers yourself? I believe you can do this in the UK and recently saw that the Overstrand municipality have implemented an online reporting system I think.

Case in point… this morning a polo went through a red light on Beach Road when two cars (seen entering from the right) were already pretty much through the intersection, that’s how red the light was. Nevermind that they were cruising over 70km/h in a 50 zone🤷🏼‍♂️

Be interesting to see if anything comes of submitting information on that form - I would be amazed if it did.

https://www.westerncape.gov.za/service/safely-home used to have a form for submitting reports including uploading evidence such as these varia pics - I reported 4 or 5 in pre pandemic days and nothing ever came of it.

In South Africa, you give way to traffic on the right, that is already entered or at the circle before you.

That does NOT mean you give way to the entirety of traffic approaching from your right, only to the traffic already in the circle or busy entering the circle as you approach.

At that point when it's your turn, then you enter and continue to give way to traffic to your left already in the circle before you.

Unfortunately the asleep-behind-the-wheel Capetonians think that you need to sit stationary at the circle for ad infinitum while the rest of Cape Town enters the circle to their right.

The logic is really simple. A traffic circle is nothing more than a moving four-way stop with pretty much similar logic other than yield to your right, then to your left.

What is is NOT is a stop till the whole world passes by.

You also need to give right of way to people entering the circle while you are waiting, this is what makes them so efficient, it's a self-regulating flow. Especially at large circles, this makes sense.

"As you enter the roundabout, traffic coming from your right has right of way. This means that traffic streaming into the roundabout from the entrance to your right will keep coming as long as no one is coming from their right."

Not cyclists but could easily have been ...

I saw this accident, passed by on my bike shortly after it happened. It's a miracle they survived, having been catapulted over the wall onto the rocks by the ocean. I saw the girl after she'd been rescued, and she seemed in a better condition than I'd dare to hope (from a distance).

Wishing them a speedy recovery, and wishing the pos driver a harsh sentence.

Arrive Alive make some "proposals" for handling a roundabout.

Legal legislation has the final say. Note that it legislates right of way to traffic already "within the roundabout where such vehicles constitute an immediate or imminent danger"

Also note that it does not say to yield to all the traffic on that road that hasn't even reached the roundabout yet. In that case, you have right of way.

It doesn't say that explicitly indeed, but having to yield to traffic that entered the circle after you got there, is a direct consequence of the "yield to traffic from the right" rule. When you are waiting, and another car enters the roundabout from a different entrance, that car is now "traffic already in the roundabout". It would also be impossible to make the judgement of who got to the roundabout first when we're talking multi-lane roundabouts where you can't even see all other incoming lanes.

This makes sense, as it allows to "clear" an entire line of cars, whereas treating a roundabout like a four-way stop severely limits its capacity.

Ofcourse, you can enter the circle when there's a gap, and when you're in a line of cars entering the circle, people waiting at another entrance will have to wait for you as well. That's the beauty of the roundabout, it gets large volumes of cars moving, in a self-regulating way. It clears a line, then allows the next entrance to clear

But I think we are straying too far from cycling related topics 😁
