So, after my recent episode of being knocked off whilst training, I was thinking of getting a something off-road to spend less time in traffic. 

 

I certainly don't want to do any mtb type events or anything, mainly just to get miles in off road.

 

I was looking at a fat bike or a gravel bike.

You would probably find the hardtail is more forgiving given the terrain you will find if you're venturing the distance off road.
If you need to hit some soft sand or rocks, you'll be very thankful to have brakes close to your fingers and the slightly more upright position will help too.
Look, I think gravel bikes are great, but other than riding many many miles on the side of the road, you may need to venture far out to find a place with decent distance or maybe do laps.

I agree not to buy a fat bike unless it's a toy.

First prize would be to have an MTB and a Gravel bike IMHO.

Gravel bikes are great. But I'm finding mine does better on better gravel and it doesn't have to get too rough before I'm reminded why suspension forks were added to bicycles. I love the range of hand positions I have that a MTB doesn't offer, but I really don't like the 'beaten up' feeling after. Also, MTBs have fatter, more compliant tyres. perhaps it's the terrain I have where I am, but I'm not enjoying gravel biking much

I, for one, don't understand the gravel bike craze. It's like someone really missed what riding bikes in 1972 felt like. Imagine we had to go back to steam powered cars?  :blush: 

I think there are great value mountain bikes that'll fit your needs.

Of the three options you shown the GT is the way to go. I loved my GT, it was a fantastic piece of kit. One thing I found through the years of mtbing is: I have never been happier or more comfortable with the gear config and or ratio I have with the 1x11. A 2x10 config is rubbish! You constantly have to shift to get a rhythm as the terrain changes. So my 2c would be that you look at either getting something which already has a 1x or change it soon after  :thumbup:

I enjoy the HT more than the Gravel Bike. I only started logging distance per bike this year, and found I spend close to 50% on my HT, followed by the SS, then DS.

 

Do not have a road bike, and find myself now only using the gravel bike when joining road rides. Come to think of it, that is a waste. #Gravel Bike must go.

 

No interest in a fat bike.

For the kind of 'mountain biking' you'll be doing and since you're really just a roadie a gravel bike will do but it's your money ....
