If you wanna race your RB, get a carbon frame with a 105 groupset 10 speed at least. If you just wanna train on it any other bike, with a 10spd groupset. All depends on budget

@Matu Don't buy a frame and build it up. There's better value for your needs on a new or second hand complete bike.

Of the above choices, definitely NOT the scott. That's an old, heavy relic, you'll feel like you're still on your MTB.

Hi guys/girls

Been riding MTB for 3-4 years and its been great fun, sometimes the MTB group feels too lazy to drive to new locations an we opt for a road ride at our nearest coffee shop instead.

I have been enjoying the road rides and would like to start looking at my first road bike.

I have a few (stupid) questions...

  • So I have a soft tail MTB:
    • can i expect a huge difference in speed/drag/power/etc. ? i assume yes, but is it really that tangible? Big difference yes.
    • will the road bike feel like an enema to ride? No.  Our tar roads are not that bad to ride on.
    • is it a road sin to have time atac pedals? (so i can wear the same shoe/cleat af MTB) Do what makes you happy.  Don't worry about what the minions might or might not say.
  • Should i focus more on a good frame or a good group set?
    • given the same price (new or used), i.e. should i go for a aluminum frame/carbon fork and 105/ultegra or full carbon frame with sora/Tiagra?  Whatever you go for, try and get 11sp.  In a month's time Shimano would have probably launched their 12sp groupsets.....SRAM is already at 12 as well as campy.
    • on a used bike scenario, how have 5 year old bikes fared against time? have the same group set changed dramatically over the last 5 years? I recently bought a 8 year old Cannondale on the Hub for R4000 and she can keep up with the best in the Vets bunches.  No issues.  Rim brake.  9 speed.
  • are disk brakes the way to go? (i have very limited experience with the performance and feel of rim brakes)  I do have a disc brake bike and I love it.  But.  More maintenance and nigglies and rubs than on the MTB........the tolerences on the road bike are much smaller.......So for now the rim brakes will be 100%
  • is tubeless a must? (wouldn't dare ride a mtb with tubes for instance)  A new technology in road biking......limited tyres.....limited wheelsets......don't get hung up on it.  You'll do fine with tubes.
Riding in the club and in the one or two races I would guestimate tubeless bikes sitting at about 5%? of the bikes.......

Think that's it!

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for this! I have being eyeing the threads of the carbon imported frames, but not there yet!

So I also stand at a cross roads, go used and cheap under 10k (get some road experience and see how I like it and what i like) or go new under 20k (cry a bit on the price and hope i love my new bike) hahahaha.

I also understand that 20k is only scratching the surface on the road game, but that's my noob budget, maybe i love it and sell my car to buy a specialized hahaha

I use road shoes on my mtb...

your track stand must then be legit then....or you ride it solely on the road????

I'd pay to see you having to unclip in those in a rock garden or something haha

My mtb is allergic to tar...

Unclip? Take a leaf from mx - when in doubt throttle it out. Speed is your friend????
