Right decision imho, was out for a run now. Found a gap between the rain bouts and dit is koud...

Feel for the organisers and riders alike, however I don't expect a refund. Circumstances and situation outside the control of anyone, safety officers, provinicial admin, medical personnel, organisers. But my opinion.

Hypothermia was on the cards today.

Glad everybody is safe, warm and away from risk.

this is 100% it.
this week spent checking conditions, i wasn't worried about mud, rain, bottom brackets etc.
it was the risk of hypothermia or getting some sickness that is going to keep me from training for 3 weeks. Juice not worth the squeeze. the meds and doctors visit will add up to more than the entry fee

All this talk of moist conditions and rain certainly has dampened my fomo … 😋

I’m still wondering what / where Morne’s ‘GOOCH’ is? Never heard of one of them…. 🫢

So update here from my desk.

*a week of weather watching with oscillating forecast, did NOT expect the level 6 warning stuff. seemed like a massive overexaggeration from authorities but out of the organiser's hands.

*headed through anyway as gear was packed, was doing the 200miler ride with 2 teammates as training.

*goodie bags are legit. very decent.

*we decided to go do a "DC" route, plotted out on komoot with hopefully some gravel bits thrown in.

*there was a nother crowd going to do the original 200miler course, with a backup vehicle dropping some stuff off at the CP1/2 spot for them, we both left about 7:30pm.

*our option of escaping the weather by going through a mountain range seem to have worked, the ominous looking clouds only started to drizzle 10km out of montagu.

*we wokeup our 4th teammate at her house in montagu at 2am, to sleep on camping mattresses for a bit. turns out the massive local derby rugby game had even been cancelled.

*phase II was resumed at 8am after coffee, rained a bit here and there on the way and we routed through bonnievale. we got a bit wet, got a bit cold but nothing major. We chose to stay on tar to keep the bikes in good working order for the race on sunday.

*on return to swellendam we showered and one teammate went home, other two went in search of pizza @MongooseMan found in his natural habitat there. it was hammering down now at times.

*kiff afternoon at the Swellenbrew/skougronde. By now we knew sunday was cancelled, but would make some sort of call on a ride in the morning. the pictures of modder en gemors on this thread from @cadenceblur were of impending mechanical maelstrom.

*organisers and volunteers all very accommodating, we ALL got complimentary hamburgers during the rugby, just for being there.

*slept in our tent there, it rained a fair bit overnight. Woke up to rain, and decided we might just pack up and go for a long hike in the rain. on the way out of town we drove 5km of the gravel to malgas, and decided that a ride would be fine. so returned to skougronde to ride from there.

*decided on the 60miler route, loaded on phone and went. made it to the Malgas store and over a coke and sausage roll figured we would do the original route as the pont was working.

*made it back to skougronde by 2pmish, not sure how that person in the white polo got their car out of that pond that appeared after they parked it.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. the inevitable what ifs?

Our route was totally fine, but granted it was the main gravel roads in the area. properly compacted, raised and dry very quickly. We did not go on the wider farm access roads that were probably mudbaths. I did about 270km over the weekend, my bike will need a clean and the bb needs an overdue inspection anyway. not expecting any gremlins.

The wind was ok, pont was an absolute pleasure (even if the workers asked for a tip 3 times, needs to get snapscan). We would have liked to have had a race on the Sunday, but I think there would have been proper moaning from many - conditions were way worse from my handlebar view 12 months ago. Did a portion of the "modder en stront" to avoid the N2, was fine but there was just the single biketrack before us.

A very tough week for a race organiser, we will be back to support next year again.

It’s a Golf 😂

And I got him out no prob 😎

Super glad you still got a ride in!

Thanks for the update and for the reasonable response to an unfortunate situation.
As part of the ATP team, I speak for the whole team when I say that we really appreciate the way the majority of people have handled this.

See you next year… look out for my car 😂
