Looking for specialist MTB bike mechanic

I cant help with the problem at all, as I am not technically inclined. (2 left hands.) But, boy do I sympathise.  There is nothing worse then having to shlepp a bike up and down to one or more bike shops, coming out poorer with every visit, wasting oodles of time, all to no avail. My wife dreads this happening to me, as I insist on regaling her with my woes until the issue is fixed.

I once had a creak on my road bike that nobody could fix. After replacing bb, pedals, headset, trying different saddles and wheels, and lord knows what else, it eventually turned out to be the saddle post in the end. But it went on far ages, and it nearly put me in Tara. As a token of her love, the wife  pretended to be interested and engaged, and appropriately horrified at the naughty bike shops,  but the boredom with my histrionics was hard to hide.

Thanks man, I've lost faith more and more in bike shops over the years. I understand completely why people give up and equip themselves to do it eventually!

Hang on, not quite fair that comment. It's an old bike, old tech and old parts. You need to take it to a specialist to sort that as most lbs nkwadays are more inclined to newer tech stuff

Yes, I know the lbs you took it to the first time might have ripped you, but perhaps you should have checked first to see if they can assist with older stuff.

No matter how much make up it takes, it's still an old duck

They literally charged me to replace parts they didn't replace. If they couldn't do the job they should have said so in the first place, that's on them. They certainly didn't do me any favors by taking my business.

But try not tarnish every lbs with the same brush, there are a bunch of good ones out there

The bike or let me say the one pic of the FD doesn't look too old. I mean being a bike mech at a lbs you can't just be a "spare part fitter". Surely if his bike is younger than 10 years then a bike shop does not have an excuse.

In my experience, and I admit I'm just a weekend mechanic, the new stuff from 11sp up has in fact become MORE fiddly and full of nonsense to set up than older group sets. 

Chain lengths and especially B-screw adjustment has become an art, on older stuff if you had it pretty close you'd be OK.'

I'm  sure I'll be crucified by the plethora of bike mechanic experts but jeez I run some crazy mixes of components and new/old combinations of chainrings/chains and it generally seems to work when you get the right mix.

I can't see how any half decent mechanic can't sort this problem out ... Like I said quite a few on here, some have even offered to take a look, let them if you can!

Charging for non replaced parts, well listen to @Harryn he knows about these things, it's fraud plain and simple

If they cannot/don't want to fix it they should tell you beforehand and not pretend they know how to fix it if they don't have the skills.

If bikeshops were more geared towards servicing new/high end bikes,  then someone must please let them know. Old stuff is borderline set and forget compared to modern 12spd as mentioned imo.
I recently acquired a pretty high end bike off here that was custom built and allegedly only spannered on by some pretty well known/regarded spanner shops . All im going to say is….If infact true, some of the relatively rookie BS i found on there while stripping it down to nuts and bolts was a joke. Id never accept that on one of my own bikes.

This happens too. It happened to my father in law at that now big chain store here in durbieville. Had an old 9speed mtb from the 90’s he just wanted the V- brakes and gears set up/ serviced. Took it in, they had one look and told him they cant because it’s ‘too old’.

it took me less than an hour to sort out.

What is this NEW tech they speak of ? Does it not involve a chain, cassette, derailleur's and chainring's. I would think my EPS would slip the same as my old 9 speed Record if chainring was worn.

The bikehub experts are an awesome bunch of guys. Yes we talk K@k at times.

Many times i have called on these guys for a part that was hard to find and within minutes i had it in my hands or it was shipped.
