wonder if this is still a seeding event.

seems like demand is not there if this is extended

seeing extensions on a number of events lately.

I'm guessing they are simply not getting the numbers they hoped they would

The Winelands event two weeks ago had about 1 500 entrants for the different groups.  But that was on a Sunday.  Certainly seemed like a well attended event.

I am wondering if the running of the 99er on a Saturday is an issue .... lots of schools are now active with sports on Saturdays, so the parents certainly are not as free as on a Sunday.

Or just another event struggling to get numbers in this financial climate ....

OR .... the 99er offers precious little that you cant do on your own on any other day, except for the race practice and seeding.

Would be interesting to hear from the Hubbers why they entered, or did not enter .....

Most of my rides are solo rides, or at best a short ride with a few friends.  Thus I found the "race dynamics" of the Winelands event to be a steep learning curve, and experience I need for those masses doing the CTCT.  Thus I entered the 99er, for more experience with the group dynamics.  This may be less of a drawing card in future.

Seeding .... very curious to see what these events do to my e-bike seeding in the CTCT .... would be nice to miss the heat of the mid-day.

I did this race last year to get some road racing practice (I'm a MTBer) and to improve my seeding for my first Argus (CTCT). I got an improved seeding, but I won't be doing this race again. Did not enjoy it. The roads are not closed, and you have some sections where the traffic volume is quite significant, and you get passed by some heavy vehicles. The route is not bad, and if the roads were closed I would consider doing it again.

Problem is that race initially clashed with the oak valley 24hr which is now postponed to the 1st of April so maybe….

I did quite a few of the Durbanville / Paarl races the last couple of years and mostly got bored of the routes. The races all seemed very well organized and attended, but for me the car / other cyclist risk along with the admin of having to pickup a number and drive to Durbanville for the race itself outweighs the joy I got from the race.

So I tried to figure out where the joy from the race came from, and I think for me I've gone from finishing 100km being an accomplishment, to having to do it fast to feel good about them. That's probably why the one-tonner last year was so much fun, because I could be happy with just finishing again.

The Winelands (Wellington) event was a bit of logistics, and a very early morning for me.  Still well worth it, and will most probably do it again.

The 99er should be interesting, logistically.  I must still confirm where to pick up my number (I know I have it in an email somewhere).  Race day I will cycle the 10 km to the start, so should be nice and warmed up for the start.  Nice roll downhill from the finish after the race.

I last did road events in the early 90's .... actually enjoying it now.

Im only doing the race because i need a seeding for the Argus.

I used to enjoy this race mainly because it offered something different. But now with Vissershok taken out and Odendal cut in half, its basically just another same old same old race.

I remember one year we even went over gravel, actually sand, then over malanschoogte, then Vissershok then Odendal. That was lovely.

Yeah if I lived closer (and they sorted out number collections) I probably would do them too. Maybe it's good to take a break and focus on something else for a while - my last couple of MTB outings made me miss dirt a lot again :)

The changed route offers nothing worth while.

Last year in Elite the race was stupid fast and dangerous (first 90km in 2h) only to sprint up Adderley, dive bomb through mini traffic circles with traffic officers unprepared for our arrival and the size and speed of our group (also cars on the road and half-way into the circles here), and then sprint up a halved Odendal. Meh.

This year I'm happy to be going to Oudtshoorn for SA's over the same weekend.

99er’s collection has always been at the racecourse clubhouse on the friday if you are on this side of town. At least the few I have done. Or on the morning obviously. I always ride there from home.

Is there safe parking for the bike at the race course when picking up the number ?  Or better to go by car ?

This is also the start area ?

Yes, and yes. Start chutes in green below.
you can take your bike in with you and if you feel so inclined, lock it to the balustrade while you get your number under the veranda (again…usually)
