Lol trust me to peak too early.

Ha ha, riding the Swartberg Pass is more like starting from the top than peaking early!

But yes, there are other great ones too. If you want to start a mission to find and ride all the Thomas Bains built passes, it can keep you busy for a long time. Use Google. They are all over the place in the old Cape Colony. Twenty something different passes, there is some disagreement about exactly how many he built. Many are now very lightly used, some are short and out of the way. But the Swartberg is, without any doubt, the master builders crowning achievement.

Glad you loved my favourite.

THIS is my bucket list item ... riding all the Bains passes.  I have a very old book at home about all their passes ..... our next holidays may well be planned around this.

In case not recommended here already, if you are looking for more of the same I'd recommend seweweekspoort. Not as many switchbacks but just as beautiful if I remember correctly. Also the nearby seweweekspoort peak is the highest part of the province.

Good weather conditions for riding,  and a few not so good road conditions (the FastOne is using some of these roads).

We also had some involuntary experimentation of carbon monoxide inhalation (non-medical grade) on a section of the route today… 🚗💨

LOTS of cyclists out and about today.  With the World Champs in 7 weeks the roads will get even busier ...

Perfect weather for cycling.  For a moment it looked like it was going to start raining at Helshoogte ....

Just LOVE this coffee stop ontop of Helshoogte.

Lekker man! That's good to know about the coffee shop. Keen to try it next time I go past. 👌

Any issues on Helshoogte? I've avoid it for a while, but keen to do my favourites ride from Stellenbosch to Franschhoek again soon.
