Van Hunks and the devil haven't been smoking on Devils Peak, so I started with a beautiful clear morning from home and rode the peninsula anti clockwise. Somewhere across False Bay it must be burning  big time (or perhaps Van Hunks and his devil pal are smoking their pipes at Hangklip) and the wind blew it our way. From Noordhoek on I struggled with the smoke and ended up with a sore throat and burning eyes. I've never seen Long Beach at Noordhoek so hazy.

Instead of just going and riding the reserve, explored modderfontein today.

Went wherever there was an unlocked gate or no private or no entry signs. Even gate crashed the piston ring car show. For a smile, The guy said since I'm on a bike and I have a helmet, they even let me through for free.

Had some very jealous kids asking their dads why I was allowed on my bicycle ;)

FUN   Gaalens...

It's as if the clouds just hang around waiting for you to pull out your camera and then they do something dramatic . Foul play I say (aka jealous)

Some cool pictures. Every time I ride that side of the world there is never anything worth taking pictures of.

I agree, sometimes I'm embarrassed to post my pictures in case I have to 'compete' with anything L.T.G posts ;)

I didn't even know we have a museum of natural history...

Honestly, before this morning, I didn't know we had one either. (Which is sad in a way, but also awesome, because the whole point of my exploring lately is to see things I haven't seen in ages, or even better, things I have never seen before)

It's right opposite city hall.

No safety concerns? Should maybe do a regular, relaxed coffee run through town ad a group. I've been living in Pretoria for 5-odd years and I didn't know about the museum either. Hell, I never get to that part of town anymore and it's hardly miles away from my home.

No safety concerns from my side. It's the third time I have done this, with varying routes without a single issue. Twice, including today, was completely alone. One time I met up with a group of other cyclists and joined them through town.

All three rides have been very early on a Sunday morning, I've left Midrand between 05:00 and 05:30 so in town around 45 minutes to an hour after that.

What I tend to do is google to see what might be something interesting to ride to/past and just jump on the bike and see where it takes me.

I go at a fairly leisurely pace, and if I want to stop and photograph something I do it.

You're more than welcome to join me if you like. I don't always go to PTA, I've been exploring other parts of Gauteng with the same idea in mind, some shorter rides around 50km, some longer at around 130km.

It sounds like you've got this all figured out. I like your style man. I think I should start doing something similar.

I must say, it's been some of the most fun I have had while cycling. I'd strongly recommend it. I can't tell you what caused the 'click' in my head, but one day in December last year I decided I don't ever do the proverbial 'stopping to smell the roses'.

Everything was always about how fast I was going, and I realised that there was some pretty cool things I wasn't even looking at as I go flying down the road, so, while I was on leave between Christmas and New Year's I headed off in a different direction every day, and I discovered I really love it.

Lurch, that old "stop and smell the roses" saying is really "the spice of life"! All too often we do the "hamster on a treadmill" thing, ears flapping, racing faster and faster, and never realizing that we are going nowhere at a breakneck speed.

Exploring is an amazing way to open your eyes! Talking to people is another one. Just this morning I had a fantastic talk with a gentleman riding a Surly touring bike through Noordhoek. He had just returned from riding his bike with his family, all the way from Cape Town to Kenya and back in a big anti clockwise round trip.

The world is an exciting place, all we need to do is go see it. In our own back yard, or around the globe!
