I am wondering if a new topic is the way to go with my post but thought I would post it here all the same just to get the "wheels" turning.

While training this morning to Suikerbossie we (a friend and me) decided to use the harbor road instead of the bike path. We were turned away at the entrance to the harbor, where it was made clear to us that we need a "pass" to enter the harbor.

Now I am all for following the rules but thought perhaps it better if PPA could apply for cyclists to be allowed to use the harbor road to gain access to the CBD, waterfront etc. This way it could be a "blanket pass" for all cyclists who opt for the harbor road instead of the bike path. We all know how dangerous that infernal bike path is.

PPA care to comment?

E-mail the PPA CEO directly and put the suggestion to him. They won't comment here. But you are welcome to give feedback here.

Ps. I feel that riding that last bit of cycle lane is only dodgy if you ride it alone. In a group, you are very unlikely to be attacked, but I now carry pepper spray when I go through there, and if alone, I wait for a group to ride with, just for the dangerous part.

Personally, I feel the harbour road will have its own problems, the way those container trucks drive.

The harbour will never let cyclists have blanket use of their road; there are too many safety issues involved.

My thinking too. With it being a working harbour, there will definitely be safety, liability, insurance and indemnity issues.

Yep, parts of the area are also National Keypoints so it's a lot easier to refuse use.

The way the container trucks drive at the entrance to the harbour as well as on the Koeberg interchange really sucks. Not long ago some guys in a Avanza were taken out inside the harbour by a trucker.I would rather take my chances on Hijack Alley!

Hey there i tried contacting Transnet, PPA and City of Cape Town in this regard...

I got the run around from transnet but finally an emphatic NO, a polite mail from PPA (eventually) that says they are still dealing with the matter, but if you read in between the lines it is pointless, and the City of Cape Town completely ignored me (apart from the automated replies telling me that i wouldnt be ignored)

and to boot, this weekend cycling back from town on the cycle path, there is the bridge you go under that smells like you are cycling through a portaloo, and there are 2 dudes sitting on the path shooting up heroin.

We're staying in Blouberg for Argus (CTCT).

How safe is the cycle path from there to just before the harbour? And could we cycle to the start, or should we rather not?

Thanks

never mind safety. If the South Ester is blowing, you might never get to the start...

What he said

We ride in from the Southern Suburbs, along Main Rd, Albert Rd, Church Street and the Cycle Path. So many others are doing the same thing, there is no safety concern. However, if you have an early start, keep in mind that you will need both a head light and a tail light because it will still be dark. You don't want to get killed because a driver couldn't see you. Also, think whether you want to keep the lights with you for the race or arrange to leave them somewhere.

This morning on Victoria road on the last corner entering Bantry Bay I was about to corner at speed when out of nowhere comes this twat waffle in his white VW golf and tries to over take me on the corner. I was moving at around 35-40kmh so naturally I am unable to keep far left. He then passed very close and started hooting and shouting out his window while cutting in front and then brake checking me  :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:

Did I nearly loose my cool with this box!!! Only he seemed very irate and clearly wanted to use his car as weapon so I skidded to a near halt and just waved him away.  Only for him to get stuck in traffic!

I refrained from any confrontational behavior as I rode passed and cooled myself to try and enjoy the rest of my ride!

All areas are dangerous so be vigilant!

I admire your restraint. I'm not sure I would have been able to restrain myself.

I always shudder at the mental image "twat waffle" brings up :D
