First time I've been piloting a tandem. The important thing so far has been moving the top speed needle above 50km/h. Plenty of runway still there, but some hasty training to happen in a hurry with Argus#27 and Argus#1 round the corner

That's awesome! Enjoy the heck out of it!🙌

When I did my last Argus in 2020 my son also wanted to know when he could join me. I told him he was allowed to participate when he was 12 and that we could do it on a tandem.

Life happened and this ☝️never did.

He's 13 now. Since I've started on the bike again in December and he's been joining me on a few rides, I've been thinking maybe 2026 could be the year. Not on a tandem though.

Just got my 7-year old twins 20” bikes for their birthday. Found two great second-hand bikes on Bikehub (a Scott Roxter and  Trek Roscoe). Now looking for some kid-friendly trails in Gauteng (Johannesburg). We like riding the bottom section of Delta park -> Fresh Earth parking lot. But I think they are ready for slightly longer rides.

Haven’t been to the cycle lab bike park. It’s a bit of a drive for us. Worth it for building their skills and confidence?

Yes definitely worth it.

Then Northern Farm - pink and eventually green routes.

Bothongo Rhino and Lion has a nice little BMX pump track that’s also fun. It’s just the pump track but you can combine it with a lunch.

Danielsrust for some nice mileage on flat, well-maintained roads with game, very little elevation.

At what age can they start on the balance bike?

depends on the legs and balance I guess!

while i fully support a balance bike to start with, even this will help prep for that

Yup, my boys started out on one of these, then on to a balance bike, skipped the training wheels and straight onto big boy bikes.  Now my eldest doesn't ride a pedal bike anymore, he has a 125 MX Bike.

@JohanDivwas the same, even had custom decals made to color match the two bikes in the Super M logo.

At 12 months he was on the balance bike and also first hospital visit for stitches under his chin, was in the dog house for probably a month.

Both still use the Y-bike today at age 7 and 5, the sound drives me crazy!!!

PS. the second one learns quicker.

leg length is the key here. My daughter loves riding on the foam seat on my bike, but both parents being smaller human beings means even though we shopped around for the shortest balance bike and cut it down in height even further. She can only now just reach the ground and start riding, she was 2 in Feb...

At one point we had to invert the saddle clamp to reduce the height by 20mm ....

And the Maritz started GROWING .... now 13 years old and 1,74m 😵
