  1. I'm so glad to be running threaded Shimano BBs. My SS just got a new BB. Old one was about three years old. That bike gets treated harshly, and out away wet. And replacement BBs are pretty inexpensive.
  2. Phone a local caravan shop and ask them what transport company they'd recommend. There is a Cara-Camp near my depot, and their transport operators have well adapted flat bed trucks.
  3. Ploeg met 'n ander man se kalwers. @CJ Van isn't just a half decent leather artisan, he also does woodwork. He made this for me. One of the handles he made earlier split, so he made a new one out of oak. Only this time he didn't turn it, he used a plane.
  4. Good luck Wayne, the scenery looks superb.
  5. I just finished a mallet yesterday. Last coating of oil needs to go on the handle today. But I've already bashed it to get over it. It's like when someone gives me a bottle of brandy or whiskey as a gift. I immediately open it and have a drink with that friend.
  6. This was on Saturday. @CJvan going up Helderberg. I'll be in Grootvadersbosch this weekend, hopefully I'll get a chance to run some indigenous forest trails in between all the braaiing and rain.
  7. With modern bikepacking bags one doesn't really need braze-on mounts. Or racks for that matter.
  8. Basically the same bikes as what we rode in in the 90s, same terrain as well. Then it was called mountain biking, now it's called gravel. I will admit that the brakes are a bit better now.
  9. I had a pair of Inov8s in between shoes. Meant for park runs and the like. I think it was called the park claw? It was nice and soft and I loved them, but they wore out faster than expected.
  10. I will also get up to naughty things with that bike. Yes it's been an expensive year.
  11. Weather is perfect for singlespeed riding. So I gave this mongrel a new BB and fresh sealant. That's the year's maintenance sorted.
  12. It happens. I've had it happen on early hydraulic disk brakes on long descents when the brakes get too hot. But modern disc brakes are light years better, and with a good bleed every now and then my brakes have been very consistent.
  13. If it fits your preconceived idea, then you will learn no more by switching off after SPEZ.
  14. Seeing as I expect ungodly feats from my brakes, I don't care Wether it is made from unicorn tears or sperm whale bone marrow extract, I will put in what works. And buy it in bulk to not pay the silly 200ml price premium.
  15. must be made from the same unicorn tears extract that comprises the bulk of fork oils.
  16. Road bikes don't need much. MTBs are a bit more pricey if ridden a lot. My main costs on the MTB are suspension services and new drivetrain components. Oh and the occasional pivot bearings.
  17. I was under the impression that cushcore isn't available in SA anymore?
  18. Die dominee se dogters vry die lekkerste.
  19. I reckon it's about R400 pm. Drivetrains lasts at least two years, and then it's working class hero parts (Deore and Zee,) so essentially it's consumables. I do all the services bar dampers and wheel builds myself. It helps that if it looks like rain or mud, I park my main squeeze and just ride the singlespeed. That bike only asks for oil, grease occasionally, brake pads and a fork service every year. I'm as happy as a pig in mud on the SS when it gets wet.
  20. The problem with building a bike, is that there are very little new frames available that are not the top of line versions. So you end up looking for second hand frames if you don't want to pay dentist bike money.
  21. I have a feeling that like myself, yiu also have a crate full of specialized oils and lubes and greases for home servicing of everything. That reminds me, I need to get some sram butter again.
  22. What people forget when repairing/servicing/fitting things themselves is that consumables used need to be on spec for it to be done correctly. It's akin to doing an oil-change on your vehicle at home, but then using the wrong oil for that engine. And while it will be a lifetime supply, and useful for someone who will service it himself regularly, the guy who needed it for a one-time use would probably have been cheaper off to have his lbs fit the freebody, or buy a scoop or two of grease from them.
  23. A bike may be an investment in your health, but do is a cheaper bike, a pair of tekkies, a set of dumbbells and a yoga mat. I reckon the best way to finance a bike is to be ahead of your home loan enough to skim the amount from there. Otherwise maybe a personal loan. The thing is, the finance facilities offered by bike shops are close to loan shark territory.
  24. It's there between Self Fulfillment and Health.
