  1. SLX or XT are the best affordable option from an initial purchase price perspective but shimano do not have any spares for them apart from pads, if you are lucky enough to find( resin is all i have seen recently.) if you break a lever its a whole new set likewise with the calliper ect. not a big issue if you never break anything, huge issue if you do. ( i know i just had to drop 2k on new levers as they do not come in single sides so you have to buy both) hope are a thing of beauty and everything can be replaced as parts but are much more expensive initially. alot more customisable to how you want them to feel. if you are coming from avids you wont know what you are missing and in my opinion what you dont know you wont miss so they may be over kill. again if you have the cash and want to spend it, spend it. you cannot go wrong with the SLX or XT brakes. i love mine, doubt i will ever change to another brand but as i say be prepared if you hit a tree and need a new lever etc.
  2. cuhkky mate you need to come riding with me, if you think VG is fun ill show you some track that will blow your mind!!!
  3. shot for the update patch, going to give it a go this weekend and see if i live, if you happen to get there and smell something frot please check if my body is in the ditch etc
  4. Patch you are right on all points but you need to remember, you and i have some common sense and a sense of self preservation. some of the guys on the spruit lack that all together. its the lemmings we need to be careful of as they will inevitably make life difficult
  5. here are some we took as we rode past the boys doing the build. loks a lot worse in real life.
  6. I ride the spruit 3 -4 time a week and have bought many a piece of land in many areas, i ride a 160mm travel monster that allows me to take the jumps and like to think i have a decent skill set that allows me to not kill myself. i do however think that the jumps are getting a little too serious and hectic for the type of trail the spruit is. i applaud the fairies and do support them in every way but the average( and not so average race rat) does not have enough skill to: read the jump properly. stop if they aren't sure about a situation. ride with a little bit of caution when its been a while since they were last on the trail. ride too fast thinking that its a Jeep track trail that is safe for all. the new gap that was being built at the virgin active is a prime example, its a crazy looking jump that is going to cause someone a lot of hurt. i think warnings are a great idea, i dont profess to know how to fund them etc but at least it may slow some people down a ittle so they dont get thrown by a new lip fdor example. i have seen 2 accidents requiring ambulances in the last 4 days at the Bomb jump. the left hand side is intimidating and only people that enjoy to jump like that will logically attempt it but the right hand side looks and always was rather flat and could be taken with speed, problem now is there is a lip there that has thrown several people over the bars due to them not expecting it and there is no way of judging it until you are right on top of it. personally i think we need to be very careful as if people are getting seriously hurt( due to stupidity or the trail) we are going to be faced with a situation, i suspect, where we will not be allowed to ride there any more.
  7. its not a pic but saw this and just want to get on my frikken bike!!!!!
  8. how do you come to this conclusion? the OP has not said what bike it is, whether he has a closed cable system or if the system is running smoothly when not riding over rough terrain, you may be right but to make this assumption off the bat is a little like shooting in the dark through a closed toilet door.
  9. uh check the rest of the forum before making comments about how much passion we have for other issues, we bitch about everything equally as much.
  10. i dont know the facts so cant completely disagree with that statement but i suspect you have been lied to. perhaps 6 or 7 actual respected, " we have quality control" companies but a chinese copy is still a chinese copy. 9 times out of 10 they are crap and put together in the fastest cheapest way possible
  11. You my friend are an idiot, you do realise your first post on yhe hub is in defense of 2 people that admitted guilt, the hub has been alive with this topic for over a week now. Statement of the year, had to put my beer down to stop from spilling it I was laughing so hard
  12. Closing down fire sale at Cs tomorrow by looks of that report
  13. I cant wait fornthe cb story, these okes must fry, all i know is if devi arrives at your door you are stuffed. Close shop and go home cause she doesnt take *** from anyone and only takes the most hectic okes on. This is going to be great. Popcorn and beer ready
  14. hold on just a minute i am confused and here is why. there is more space on that road than most i have seen. the yellow line which has been measured to be painted looks to be about 2m wide. the car just about to pass the cyclists looks to be about 1m from the potential yellow line. while i am not a fan of riding 2 abreast this really looks to be a case of what the hell where you thinking when you decided to stop and give 2 guys out for a peddle crap about it. i dont know the rd or the area and dont know if ahead or behind them the road is narrower than it is in the pic this makes no sense to me at all. maybe i am just not understanding rant properly
  15. thats a frikken good idea of what to do with all those stupid bloody balance bracelets everyone has lying around, rebrand and sell
  16. did a 20 odd this morning from pnp up to alberts, its all good, one or 2 soft areas but nothing hectic, the landscape though is badly scared from all the riding which has stopped the land from repairing properly in most areas, nothing we can do about that unfortunately. no mud to speak of and still great fun.
  17. i wsh after every single ride unless its laet at night and i am riding the next day. geneally use clean green or prepsol if i have some in the house, witha std garden hose, no high pressure washer>>>>EVER!!!!!. if it really muddy and i dont have time to do a full wash its a quick hose down to get all the crap off before my next ride is a bare minimum. generally give the bike a wash and dry with a towl and a little baby oil on the frame to make sure it shines like a showroom model, drivechain gets a full degrease once or twice a month and then fresh grease where required and some dry lube on the chain in case i forget before i start my next ride. has worked for me for 5 years and i generally have the cleanest looking bike at the start of each ride. my mrs bike get the same as mine when used. road bikes get the same treatment but less frequently as the are generally cleaner than our MTB's.
  18. i think a few hears ago the differences were quiet clear but now its not the case, thanks to tech filtering down over the years the entry level stuff is actually very good. the big difference is in weight( and yes still a little tech but its only because the top end stuff has all the new bits on) routjie has possibly the best you could put together, personally i would go for XT shifters though as i just cant see the value in spending XTR money for my kind of riding, i believe the xt is more durable due to having more weight behind its parts.
  19. STOP SMOKING!!!! start there and work out the rest while on the bike, set your own goals and measure yourself against them vs what other people tell you you should do.
  20. I dont have a mud guard solution for you but I have a work around for you, I used a small spring, half of the one you might find in a bic pen to keep the ink cartridge in place is what I used, put it between the actuation lever and the cable stop. It doesn't stop the mud getting in but does help prevent the cable getting stuck so the seat will move or not when you need it to at least till the end of your ride till you can clean it out.
  21. thats odd cause the road is the only place a 29er belongs
  22. Check he doesnt have a clutch rear derailleur, that makes it stiff so as to avoid chain slap.
