  1. just a few considerations- Tracker active is not a satellite based communication system. So yes it picks up GPS signals from satellites and calculates your position, it then communicates your position via cellphone network. There are massive holes in signal and if there is no signal then it doesn't matter if it knows where you are, no one else will and you can't call for help. SPOT is an all satellite based system, uses a satellite communication system so anywhere on the planet it can track you and can convey your message. This is why it is more expensive, ask anyone who has ever used a satellite phone. So yes satellite communication is expensive, but really how much time do you spend riding where there is full cell signal, if you are a road rider you will probably be ok, in which case you may as well share active location via whatsapp and just carrry your phone- same solution at almost no extra cost to you. If you are riding in more under developed places go for a spot tracker.
  2. I used to battle with this a lot, as a climber and paddler having slightly developed lats makes the issue even worse. I switched to wrist based HR monitor a while back and I will never ever wear a hr strap again. as for the accuracy it was within 5% of my old HR strap readings when I wore both for a wattbike session so all good. Plus you never need to clean it and never forget your strap again.
  3. If you ever run the spruit or botanical gardens you will see cyclists treat runners similarly to how cars treat cyclists. It is the same as any other food chain, picture birds sitting on different levels of powerlines- the top ones look down and all they see is sh!t, the bottom birds look up and all they see is a$$holes...
  4. I got 3000 points for running 167 km, because they don't rewards ultra ultra distance events so you get the same as a marathon, but you get more for ironman because that requires training( rough quote from them). But yes you get sweet nothing for team events, 120km full moon adventure race they say nope team event and adventure race so sweet nothing, but like ct2, split your gps activity into 2 parts, at midnight and re-upload to garmin/suunto and claim an ultra distance exercise per day for more points.
  5. Got to develop that cast iron stomach, immune system needs as much training as the legs...
  6. dunno about perfect matches, but certainly will avoid racing with my ex for a stage race again...
  7. this or tie the fuse of a big firecracker to the base of a sparkler, put the firecracker in the middle of a paper bag of dog sh!t with the sparkler top sticking out, insert into post box... The slow burning sparkler should get you clear and safe...
  8. I have a friend I run with and we have watched some lady let her dogs crap in marks park a few times and denied it when confronted. She denied it even though she never had bags to pick it up(said lady has multiple dogs and walks them daily). Anyway walking home from a drink in greenside we spotted her garden and the usual pack of dogs and my friend decided to drop trow and leave a gift on her driveway... But this is typical behaviour here, not on my doorstep, not an issue... Break the speed limits on all roads, but get angry when it is in your complex or outside your house or kids school. Be disgusted about drunk kids running over cyclists at 4am, but is more than happy to let hubby drive home after 3 or 4 beers at a braai at 5pm. Hates people littering but happy to let dog k@k in the park. Cars must give 1,5m space, but bikes don't have to make any effort to not hinder cars too much. common sense, common logic, common courtesy -very rare things these days- I think that maybe schools forgot to teach the meaning of common...
  9. I am with you on this, I would rather have 50km of quality running that 100km of half arsed km's with no real rest days. Then again I am merely a 100mile trail runner who has never done comrades so i am not a real runner apparently
  10. Edited- Retrospectively I was wrong in my post and posted without knowing enough, Apologies to all involved, it is a hate of people who cheat that gets me too hot under the collar too quickly.
  11. DIY... No one will love your bike as much as you do. Also you will know your bike backwards and have the skills to fix it if need be.
  12. If that thing will heat up a croissant to put the bacon in, I would buy one today
  13. So on another note, how awesome is that warm fuzzy feeling when you chase down and pass a cyclist on a climb, doesn't happen that often but there are certain sections of road which make it possible. Had a guy who was clearly casually heading home from work on his bike yesterday and passed him, think I turned his commute into an impromptu hill sprint session...

  15. just buy a big syringe and some clear hose from a pet shop and reverse bleed it, takes 5mins and costs under R50 and then you have a new skill set, remember one day you may need to bleed brakes and not have access to a bike store.
  16. we were running the mnweni marathon route for fun last year, at the top of rockeries we took 5 mins to chow, one guy pulled out a chicken mayo roll you can be sure it made every one of us trying to smash down bars jealous.
  17. On the note of Hoka's I am retiring my speedgoat 2's from serious running as of this week, will buy another pair early next week after payday. Lifespan: 6 months -Bought October last year 1080km - note these are trail shoes and I actually probably ran 300-400km on tar with them and wore out the tread. Blisters:0 (Haven't had a blister in years though, so not really a big rave) Longest run: 60km skyrun route for wartrail- 9hours Current condition: To be fair my tar running has worn the tread out a bit fast, as a light runner to me the soles and support still feel good and solid. The upper has no tears or damage, certainly looks better than other name brand shoes after 1000km. I will still wear them for gym work and as plaas shoes for a while. Damage in general- nothing to write home about, few tassles of foam but all superficial, structurally all seems good. Comments: It takes a little to get used to them, especially in tech but once you comfy in them you appreciate them and down hills are awesome. I don't rate them as fast shoes for short distance, but on longer runs they are amazing, I am gonna look at getting a combo of speedgoat and then a short distance race shoe. The upper is narrow which suites my waterski shaped feet. I have not had a single leg niggle even inthe time running these shoes, but that could be coincidence. Would I recommend them? - If they are the right shape for your feet and want to run far then definitely without hesitation. I have 2 more over 150km running races coming up this year and both will be done in Hoka Speedgoats.
  18. It is pointless going for upside down forks, in motorbikes where they are mounted in a triple clamp by inverting the forks you gain fork travel by having the outer fork tubes run up past the headset bearings and in MX and enduro bikes this is worth it, but the RS1 still has a neck so you gain no more travel, and you still have the flex issues involved with a fork with a neck. You also gain the issue that the stanctions are low and vulnerable, if you damage the stanction tubes on rocks they will eat the fork seals and you will have to replace the seals and recoat the stanctions. So ya don't bother,
  19. This^^^ Or just cycle without socks and then put on running socks for run, also means you don't have to put socks onto wet feet after the swim.
  20. it is the first 58km of the skyrun route, so 58km +-2200m elevation gain...
  21. Had a good run for the first section of the lady grey parkrun on sat, cool windy conditions, very very wet up on the mountain lots of long grass and swampy mud, managed to get down into balloch in just on 9 hours so pretty happy with how the running is going at this stage in the year. Huge respect to Hilton for running the full 100km Lady Gray park run for fun as a training run and absolutely smoking the rest of us to Balloch cave, seriously impressive stuff. Unless you are running treadmill don't bother, rather be aware of your surroundings so you can hear cars/traffic or other runners and cyclists on the trail.
  22. I carry a valve, plugs, bombs and adaptor, and a tube. Note when you put a tube in after a tubeless tire has failed, make sure to run your hand over the inside of tyre, to clear any thorns stuck in tyre or you will ruin ruin a new tube. The other big thing is the actual tyre you run. Run a solid heavier tyre and you will have less issues and less need for extra tools.
  23. Again, if Chris Kyle as a highly trained gunman with tons of real world combat experience couldn't draw and defend himself against element of surprise, how are you going to manage it...
