  1. This topic is one of the more interesting opinion topics on le hub.

As I see it, everyone (and by "everyone" I mean anyone who has posted on the the topic) agrees that overall the tygerberg trails are rad, with some trail centres being preferred over others. It's also agreed the club does a good job with keeping the peace with landowners (respect to those who allow us access). But when you ride the trails regularly, you start to want a little more...and that's when the opinions fall to pieces.

Those wanting a little more are asking for some natural gnar, which to me means rocky, rooty, off camber and maybe some challenging steeps. Jumps are cool, but bigger jumps doesn't really mean technical in my opinion, they just mean more intimidating and arguably more risk (especially when the wind is howling!). So asking for a little more natural gnar doesn't seem too unreasonable or offensive to me, since it's not saying the trails are totally terrible, but rather that having just a little more natural gnar would add some spice (or variety if you will).

Yet unfortunately the above suggestion is found to be an offence against the club. Suppose sometimes the only option is to agree to disagree - no need for vitriol. I for one think more natural gnar would be great

  2. Ja, I did that but am looking for a frame only option as I have almost all the parts for a build. From what I can see they do not have Slade frames only.

You can get a frame only option direct from Germany - I've inquired about this route before with the cost being close to the R5k mark for the frame including VAT and delivery (when I inquired at end of 2019 they only had large frames available). Comms were reasonable but the wait time for it was protracted so I opted for a Dartmoor in the end. Try contacting elena(at)silverbacklab(dot)com

  3. Nothing quite like a good tyre debate!

I get the point the Captain is making about DD casing, I've punched a hole straight through an Icon EXO tyre without too much effort really. So casing is a clear consideration from my perspective too as nothing quite kills a ride like a hole just above the tyre beading! Certainly do like the fast rolling of the Icon, but as above maybe the "Slaughter / Minion SS/ Rock Razor / e13 jobby" is the better consideration with heavier casing (from my perspective at least). Have ridden the Minion SS before which I found great but the tyre did develop bubbles in the tread over time which seems to be a known issue.

Interestingly, it seems most suggestions center on Maxxis and Spaz combos (aside from D&D's suggestion above). Is this genuinely because Maxxis and Spaz make the best tread patterns/options? Or is it more because they're some of the best options we have available in SA that go the distance and stand up to abuse (given tyres don't come cheap)?

Another question, given the suggestion of the Vittoria tyre combo, anyone ridden the Aggaro? And what's the indication for the Maxxis Dissector coming to SA?

  4. Taking on Pinkbike's moniker of 'down-country' bikes, what are opinions on tyre combos that would fit this category? Tyres that sport some reasonably aggressive tread but remain decently fast rolling.

If going with Maxxis, perhaps something like an Aggressor up front (2.5WT) and Ikon (2.35) out back would fit the bill. Any other thoughts?

  5. I haven't read through all the posts on this thread, so not sure if the following has been covered, but these would be useful changes to what is currently showing (IMO):

    1. When browsing all the classifieds (no filters) the page title reflected in the browser's tab shows "Search½Bike Hub". Could/should this be changed to "Classifieds½Bike Hub".

    2. Is it possible to have an option to increase the number of classifieds viewed per page? This would be particularly helpful for browsing using a mobile device

  6. I work on the assumption that whatever I'm selling is worth half its original value by default. Even if it has (by my account) seen relatively little use.

The second hand bicycle (whether a whole bike or its individual components) market is rarely a place to recoup or make money. From my experience, the second hand market is a place to try score a bargain (myself included in this expectation).

If you want a higher price that is closer to original market value, expect to sit with the item for a while.
