RANT: Cape Town City cycle lanes

While I applaud your efforts Hairy, this seems like a lost battle.

There is little to no response from the authorities, and even less action from Law enforcement.

The Woodstock section from Church Street to the Observatory bridge is a joke. I think it's silly to even think that its a usable bike lane.

(the other direction seems to be OK)

my thought process is that a tool such as Twitter acts as a means to record in the public realm, the state of the lanes, both good and bad. It also serves as a record showing that the City has been informed.

Having other riders inputting via the twitter handle, will also help to generate a more holistic over view of the cycle lanes in CT ..... my routes are limited to the CBD and then to Table View.

All is not lost. There have been positive actions by the city when potholes, etc have been reported.

If you are doing the Woodstock run/ride, please try and snap a couple of pics every now and again, and load it up via the Twitter account.....

Thanks I didnt know how to put it so eloquently.

Just a pity they cant do more spot fines. I see at least 3 times a month, how a traffic cop walk around the parking lot behind our work and issues tickets. Why cant they do the same for cycle lanes is beyond me.

.....or do like the mayor of Tblisi and drive over the illegally parked cars in a troop carrier.

keep putting pressure on them via social media, emails to whomever, etc .... just keep chipping away to get to the end result!

Simple answer? Cycling makes up less than 1% of the modal share on roads. Would you spend a scarce resource on an item that is less than 1% of your business?

The number of cars parked in that particular cycling lane through Woodstock and especially Salt River, can probably fund free universities for all if they are targeted and fined! :whistling:

I had a lekker commute in today, if I had a car, google said 1 hour 20 minutes, I was at work and showered in 40 minutes :)

Plenty of fun on the MTB as well. Going to see if can go back to claremont via the mountain maybe
