So - my good friend Mr Dangle has a pair at his shop, which is about 20km from home, and he will charge me more than R20 a piece, BUT I am going there and paying with a smile.

Summit Cycles ftw.

The 70 year old man is not the box. No-one is suggesting that everyone starts beating pensioners. He just doesn't know anything about bikes, which IMHO makes him the wrong guy to be selling bikes in a bike shop. That said, it is not his fault if he has not been trained by the owner of the store.

This shop could have been great. The concept is brilliant - a bunch of 2nd hand bikes in place to be poked and prodded. It is just a shame that I don't like the owner, or the way he runs the business, because it is about 200m from my house.

So you guys all want to jump a 70 year old now?

Just to clear things up. Was the guy who served him (called him an a**hole) 70 years old?

I don't recall the OP mentioning age. The 70 year old was brought up by someone else

I did not ask his age, he was definitely not 21.

Never been a good judge of age in general, so not going to attempt now.

As Nolipoli says, there are two guys at the shop - the owner (Collin) and the old guy (Joe). There is also a financial partner who doesn't actually work there (Wayne)

I know for a fact that Joe does not profess to be a professional bicycle salesman, but he helps out if things get busy - as an alternative to letting a customer stand alone and wait. I have to smile at the quote

"I was in there a little while back looking at some of the 2nd hand bikes and heard the old man trying to help a potential customer. He kept saying "This bike is also nice." (that was all he said)."

because that is exactly what Joe says! He thinks all the bikes are "quite nice" :-)

I've always got on well with everyone there and have always had good service.

I guess, as we've seen on so many threads here over the years, anyone can have a bad personal experience at any of the shops, anywhere in the country, and often it's a surprise to everyone else.

There's no real excuse for rudeness, but I would think of it more as a "Fawlty Towers" moment, than a "personal attack" moment.

The owner and the guy I suspect is the box here is probably around 50 yrs old and is as abrasive as a coarse sand paper. The old guy just seems to work there and mind his own business as far as I can tell.

I would have definitely gone back and "said" something to him, he really needs a PK.

The old guy I would leave as is.

Good on you for being the bigger man, let's see what the response is.

I bought some of these clamps about a year ago through a lbs for a lot more than R20.. Could only get gold, so if you want gold ones, I am happy to swap..

Getting some black ones from Dangle.

BUT:

I know the shop in STB sells all kinds of colours and we have a certain friend there who would be happy to collect and post...

Regardless of a bad day or not really getting the picture of what a customer is looking for, doesn't give you the right to call anybody an "asshole" in my books, even if you lost a loved 1 or are pissed off with your dog for eating your lunch, doesn't give you the right to abuse a customer, let alone a fellow human being.

Been there, wasn't really impressed with what they stock or pricing so doubt i'll ever use them for much.

Crazy that you wouldn't sell your spares? Isn't the idea behind business to move stock and make money?
