Don't most people ride like this ? o_O I know I do. 

 

I'm with you. Almost killed myself though when I borrowed a bike for a test ride recently and found the front brake on the left.

YOU DO KNOW YOU ARE WRONG!

I was, but now that I cycle on the right-hand side of the road it makes sense. 

 

Plus I didn't know better when I bought my first bike as an adult at Revolution Cycles with the brakes set up that way.  :whistling:

all this fancy tech, and still the rear derailleur remains the age-old standard design, like a limp arm protruding precariously. Some companies are attempting to change this though. Hopefully soon.

Still better than a heavy, expensive gear box that can't down-shift under load.

i think you get used to stopping pedaling for 0.5 sec *shift* and continue

It's not too bad. You get used to it quite quickly. But when you are desperately looking for an easier gear on a sudden 20% climb it can suck.

 

as far as derailleurs go every time I've had a nice fancy one (Saint, XTR) hanging off the back of my bike it's ended up in pieces in a bush. 105, Zee and SLX for me. Anything fancier is a waste on a pleb like me.

the flip side of the coin is that if you down-shift under load with a conventional drivetrain you stand a good chance of ripping apart your chain..... I "may have" seen this in practice on a "friends bike" ........ if you know what I mean :P
