I sat in a "bunch" to Joe Slovo. Then on my own the whole way. Came in 2:59:52. I wouldn't begrudge someone who had the opportunity to sit in a bunch and come in sub 3. They still made it around the same "track" as I did. Doesn't matter how, as long as it's within the rules of cycling. Do you think the chaps on "le Tour" would be able to do what they do solo? No. If you, the OP, want to test yourself as an individual, then join us for Ironman sometime. Or take part in a TT

No way argus is on average 25 minutes slower. Even for the winners.

But 94 has more climbing than you think.

So teh record time for ACT is 2:27:41 (Robbie Hunter) and that will be on a very good day. Winning time for 94.7 this year 2:08:41. So basically 20mins slower. Not sure of conditions on Sunday but I'd say that ACT being 20 -25 mins slower is about correct on a good day ( hell if that wind blows EISH...)

The only race ride where a sub three means anything is the Argus, if you can hang with the bunch over the climbs then you have earned it.

What rubbish, a sub 3 in the Ride 4 Sight, and Berg n Dale races is a well earned effort. In fact, most 100km+ road races, doing it under 3 hours is a good effort. even 94.7 has enough hills and wind at times to make a sub3 a worthy goal.

One of the fundamentals of road racing/riding is that it is a team sport. A sub 3 is a sub 3 is a sub 3, in a bunch or not. If you want to measure yourself against others evenly, do a TT.

Otherwise enjoy the ride and chase for your PB.

We all need to remember, that for some a sub 4 or 5 is equally as satisfying, if you have put in the training.

Let the flaming begin

Argus is 15km longer too.

Dis hoekom ek al hoe minder en minder wil padfiets ry. op die mtb is dit net jy en die pad en die fiets...

If you think bunch riding is too easy ride with a faster bunch. Simple really.

Our club had times from 2:08 to 2:59 coming in under three hours and all suffered.

Once you are riding faster groups sub three isn't as portant as how fast you go.

That what got me thinking - the top T de F contenders generally build themselves a team with the express purpose of making their own lives easier for the majority of the race - until the last 2km of a climb or whatever. Riding in a bunch is without doubt a percentage easier than going it solo. So, if it is a percentage easier - and I belive anything up to 30% is possible, then does it count as a "personal" record?

my mate wanted to do a sub 4 so badly, he ended up doing a 4:08. He has been riding the tread of his tyres on the IDT and doing a cradle ride every second weekend for the last 2months(not enough for a solid base, but he has put everything in)

I feel for him, as this was what he wanted to do. The target set by each individual is a realistic one and therefor I support anyone who wants to do sub5/4/3 or just finish the race.

I've got huge respect for the guys starting the race 10am. those are the true warriors.
