- Don't forget a quick drying towel (those 'super absorbent' camping ones are ok, just wash them at home a couple times before the Epic, otherwise all they'll mostly just move water around on your body when drying yourself)

- Also, a head lamp. The ones with an elastic to strap to your noggin, your tent doesn't come with a light inside, and you don't wanna be holding a torch while you need 2 hands to dig through your bag.

- A small padlock/s or combination lock/s so you can safely leave your phone/garmin etc charging in the Telkom trailer (get your stuff charging asap after you finish each stage. Everybody leaves it to do on the way to dinner, bad idea). Also locks your bag's zips closed for transportation between villages, as well as your tent between stages that start and finish at the same village.

- If you left kit for them to wash, don't forget to collect it as soon as possible. it's never dry, and wont be for as long as its all bundled in the bag, hanging on the fence. If you've got it you can open it all out and hang it on top of your towel, on the roof of your tent. Here's a lil tip I wish somebody gave me. Take a few clothes pegs. You can put stuff on the roof of your tent during the stages where you start and finish in the same village, it'll be dry by the time you're back, but without the pegs, it may be in another province.

-I packed all my kit including gloves, socks and buffs in big ziplock bags (available at Westpack), 1 fresh set for each day, that way if for some reason you didn't wash a set (I had 4 sets of kit so washed 2 sets every second day), back into the ziplock it all goes after a stage so it doesn't end up stinking out your entire bag of clean stuff.

Hi Guys

I havn't done epic yet but did Cape Trek last year Good advise Max & Ariane gave me take spare cycling shoes with for wet days so at least you have dry shoes every day. Also when you take shower get in the shower with your clothes on and while you wash you can "stomp" your clothes and wash it that way. It works as well just pain when it's raining to get your kit dry again. Spares take as much as you can stick in your kit as at the event the guys doing bike service charge premium price for parts and you'll pay if you dont have a choice. Rather take to much than to little.

My 10 Cents hopefully one day soon I'll ride Epic too (When my ship comes in)

Another trick to dry soaked shoes is to stuff them with newspaper and leave it in overnight (obviously in your tent / indoors. You'd be surprised by how much moisture the newspaper soaks up.

Cheaper than 2 pairs of shoes...

I can't frikkin wait now. Training is almost done - just some polishing. Equipment is all sorted - 2 easy rides this weekend to ensure nothing falls off.

BoostedGP and I have decided to semi race it. We'll go hard enough to consider it a race but slow enough to take in some of the sights, sounds and scenery. I reckon (unless you're a pro) it's better to walk away feeling good with a bunch of memories than race in the red all day every day and walk away relieved rather than happy.

In terms of your preparation - it is a long way off still for the weather models to be anywhere near certain, but its worth looking at the weather from Sunday through the first week.

(At this stage you may want to consider extra brake pads, spare chain and some spare derailleur wheels.)
