Shocking incident between van driver and cyclists in Camps Bay

The idiot comment was made by me, and is in reference to the so called President of the guilty club saying it was fine cause his cyclists were provoked, now if your okay with that behavior and letting a person who should lead by example state this on any form of site, then i am ashamed to be a cyclist cause one fools comment paints all of us cyclists as dim whited road obnoxious fools, now i am not one of those fools and im sure neither are you, surely our Club Presidents should set examples and lead and teach correctly, my comment to close the club is made cause what else will his "people" do to endanger all of us at the end of the day. Signed proud idiot speaking the truth like everyone wants to but may be holding back cause it cause a discomfort, and a "Beating" excuse the pun.

Clearly the events of yesterday has evoked outrage condemnation and as a result some emotional response. We need to safeguard ourselves against blanket statements as the actions of a few shouldn't be allowed to marr the reputation of the coolective. In any cycling club there are always a few hot headed ( some view it as competitive) personalities and given the least probation will fly off the handle; does this mean all members in the group are the same?

I have read the thread and I do not believe the president was on droning the behavior all he is suggesting is this is the 1 side.

Let's be objective in our decisions based on facts and I agree do condemn the guilty parties but do not let it turn into an MCC witch hunt.

I'm concerned that its Been forgotten Bellville cycling club was also part of the misbehaved group.

Looking at the bigger picture for a second this really isn't an isolated incident, this happens all the time, only difference is this time it was caught on camera, quite frankly the lawlessness on the roads in South Africa is just ridiculous you just have to look at it on your way to work... in the morning people mounting pavements driving down one ways , no one cares, i say no one , i mean of course there are those that do.. however it is just a total lack of respect for others, it's not only the taxi's its your neighbor in his 4x4, like I said just lawlessness its a joke really. all we can really do is drive / ride a little bit better each day and be a little more patient and hopefully that makes a difference...

When was the last time you saw a video of a group of drivers attacking a cyclist?

Hardly ever in SA but often in the UK. Then again this is the first of this kind that I have seen. Don't get me wrong, this is not right. All I am saying is, did the taxi incident involving the Labschagne brother ever make the head line news like this incident?

I am not one to normally comment on potentially explosive topics, but feel so disgusted and outraged at this incident I cannot help myself!!!

To the "cyclists" on the video..... Thank you very much! I deeply appreciate the luminous target you have painted on my back!!!!!

Its great to act like a pack of rabid dogs when there are a number of you together! (Please note I was not there so am not apportioning blame to any group!)

Your testosterone induced rage has done more to damage the already fragile relationship between cyclists and motorists than any single incident in Cape Town Cycling history. Your selfishness in acting out as a gang of "vigilantes" will have far reaching effects on ALL cyclists for years to come! Your feelings of being invincible in a group may stop motorists from reacting to groups of riders in the future, however it will make those of us who prefer to ride in solitude, (for those of you in the video who have no grasp of English, punctuation or Capital letters, Solitude means riding on our own), a far easier target for aggressive motorists!

If you are indeed members of a club and spend any time at all riding the Argus route, you will know that it is a risky route to ride, you will know motorists are unpredictable, you will know that 70kgs of body and a 10kg bike will always come 2nd to a ton of car!

To the club involved, Mr Chairman, please have the balls to publicly admonish the degenerates who have crept into your club! They should be publicly named, publicly shamed and banned from competing in any sanctioned event for Life!! I guarantee you that a life WILL be lost on Cape Town roads as a direct result of this incident!

It is such a shame that of the thousands of cyclists who have lobbied for the City of Cape Town to accept us as road users, who follow the rules of the road, who promote cycling safety, it only takes a small group 59 seconds to destroy it!

There, I have said it all politely. That in no way contains any of the words or sentences I would like to use!!

DPG your comments resonate with me. I really would like to see the culprits make the situation as right as possible

AS DPG says this 59sec clip will change motorists opinions of cyclist for months / years to come ,,,,personally I can't see the culprits "making this right"

Am I the only one who can't see the robots in the video?

Hold lets not be so fast to condemn.

Lets say that a portion of that is true. Does it justify the actions? They were being pelted with water sachets.

Okk so what I've been pelted with water bombs by kids on Suikerbossie. So I stopped and asked them why. They said thats what people do on the tour de france to keep the riders cool. I smiled and rode on. no harm intended.

During the Argus cycle tour, people turn their hose pipes on the cyclists and no one gets off their bike and tres to shove a fork through your head.

I can't see any clear provocation or endangerment of life since the riders were not being brake tested (although the lead rider appears to have been break tested.........see what I did there)

I think this club needs to take a long hard look inside itself and evaluate if its abiding by its ethos. My input to them is no you are not.

Your riders behave badly every weekend between Lakeside and Fish Hoek, showng little regard for personal safety or that of pedestrians and not respecting the big steel cages.

And your riders are generally aggressive. Maybe offer them softer saddles so that the testosterone can escape to their legs and not pool in their brains.

But I also get their point on frustration with motorists. It is unsafe out there but really MC2 teach your members to pick their battles

Your club owes the Sea Point Community, the driver of the vehicle, Cycle Tour and the entire cycling community an apology.

Utterly stupid reaction by these riders. Time for the offending riders to just man-up and do the right thing here.

I think a contributing factor is the lack of law and leadership in our country. People feel like there's no justice. Every time a traffic light goes red three more people will still fly through, some of them on the cellphones. Nothing happens. People get bust drunk driving, nothing happens. People get caught for robbery, nothing happens. We feel like we need to take it on ourselves to show other people what's right or wrong, that we need to shout to sort things out because it's just chaos around us and nobody is doing anything about it. So this frustration boils over at the slightest thing, a person not indicating, a cyclist straying into the road, somebody texting on their phone in traffic and we go mental because we feel like if we don't nothing happens, the person won't learn their lesson, there will be no repercussions… nothing will happen. It's not a good situation.

Touche....Bra Juliaass just got off from a speeding offence.... :cursing: :cursing:

Cyclists are often attacked by motorists, yet it's only when cyclists attack motorists does it make head line news. Very sad.

No...it's only when an opportunist takes a video clip and post it world-wide....
