In the light of the recent Carte Blanche report, ASG and Pinarello S.P.A denounce the practice of selling fake Pinarello bicycles. If you would like to confirm that your Pinarello is indeed authentic, contact winston@asgworld.co.za and supply us with the serial no (located under the bottom bracket) of your bike for verification with Pinarello in Italy.

We are continuously working towards identifying the suppliers of fake Pinarello bicycles. We would like to remind parties participating in this illegal practice that it is a criminal offence and that we will not hesitate to pursue legal action against such parties.

Does that mean you will be pursuing the CS perps for violating your aforesaid copyrights and making an example of them? Surely this is an opportunity to show all and sundry that you guys are serious about protecting what has been entrusted to you as agents of the said brands? Also a successful prosecution will speak volumes to the industry, not only to prevent future attempts like this, but also will send a message to potential future brands looking for representation in this country that we are serious enough about our responsibilities for them to entrust us with other exotic Marques .

hmm, though we established that the dogma AA bought was ~R100k RRP

is this higher estimate due to the rand tanking since then?

They're about GBP8000 to GBP9500 depending on finishing kit (groupset wheels, bars stem, saddle pin and saddle.)

The question that should be asked is how much money has Pinarello (and ASG) lost due to the actions of CS? All those customers who were sold fakes would have purchased genuine Pinarello's if they had known.

That is if they were all able to afford the real deal.

be careful what you wish for...

Specialised going after other companies for stupid stupid potentia copyright infringements e.g. Allez vs alize, increase the cost to the end user. Its a nice way to justify price hikes,

ASG going after the shop again increases their cost and that is carried over to the purchaser. There is already enough information out there to kill the market for fakes. Even a bit of ridicule towards cheapskates who buy these fakes is in order; create a fake market and you should be shunned.

Keep it real

I watched an "Air Crash Investigations" must have been a year ago, where a part had failed and cause a plane to go down.

Turns out that 40% of the parts found in the repairs and refurbish departments of the airlines in the states were found to be fakes, copies, etc... frightening stuff.

And almost non of the guys buying them knew they were knock-offs.

Here's the Wikki Page

http://en.wikipedia....nair_Flight_394

The USDOT audited the FAA's inventory and found that 39% of the parts in the bins were forged. The fraudulent parts came from a parts broker that was prominent in the parts broker industry; 95% of the parts in that broker's inventory were forged.

Me for one. When I needed to replace a frame and a Pinarello was suggested by my honest LBS, I consciously declined because I knew that most Pinarellos you see on the road were fake.

Note, I knew that the one I would have got would have been the genuine article, but the brand had been diminished to such an extent by the fakes I did not want one.

Old Stock? Are they the Dogma 65.1 Think 2 version and do they have carbon wheels?

Actually the number of fake/pirate parts out there are scary. Especially for motorbikes.

So yes, while complete 'fake' bikes aren't out there, there's plenty pirate parts floating around, because that's where the money is.

R800 for a top end MTB tyre with Kevlar what not etc .... R2000 for an average motorbike tyre that still has basic construction.

The other day I had to stop in at Honda to have a puncture repaired, new tube plus an hours labour. Total of R458 incl Vat.

An estimate on a centre stand was around R3500, excl labour. All it is, is tubular steel that works on a tensioned spring under the bike. No titanium, no carbon, vokal bling.

That's just on a bog standard workhorse like a Transalp, don't even start on the more exotic high end stuff. Like servicing costs on even an older model Ducati are enough to make your wallet bleed through your anus!

So to a large extent while the costs on top range bicycles are high and very subject to supply and demand, it's also very much relative, I feel anyway.

How about a quote of over R2000 from one zook stealership and got he work done for R800 odd at another... and bike is 100% after being fixed by the latter who have an incredibly good rep built up over the years (read decades). No one can tell me the first guys weren't chancing their luck big time.

The question burning in our minds isnt whether you condemn fakes (duh!), but what are you doing about helping Andrew and what steps are you taking to confront/prosecute Cycle Science who openly admitted to selling fake Pina's?

I am interested, why in your opinion, ASG owes AA any thing?

Sure, ASG should take the shop to the cleaners, but why do they have an obligation to help AA ?

Ok, well that's outside of anything you quoted my post on. Yet you answered your own question, yes?

I'd say there are chancers in every industry, especially when it comes to servicing (motor) bikes/cars etc...
